I just got my p4 and the heatsink had a (thermal pad) and intell says that not to use thermal grease is there beter or worse performance with the (thermal pad).

The pad performs ok if you install it once and leave it alone. If you remove the heatsink, it's ok to use the paste, according to one Intel tech I talked to. The pad is a one shot solution. Temps with the paste will be only 2-3 celcius lower, at least with my experience.
