I am having trouble getting my Symbol SPT-1800 palm OS device to
perform a modem sync using the cradle.

The cradle is serial. I have the following connection: cradle->null
modem adapter-> data cable -> i55

I think my problem is the init string for the modem connection. I have
a tried a variety of different strings, but none of them seem to work.

When I try to perform a hotsync, I initiate the hotsync on the palm
device, and depending on the modem init string I am using, I see a
message on the phone "Data Call Setup", then a loud BEEP, then the
message "Call Failed". Looking at the palm device, I see the message
"Error:no dial tone".

I have tried to find the proper init string for the Motorola phone, but
I haven't had any luck.

Is anyone using a cellphone with a data cable to perform a hotsync? If
so, what is your init string. Maybe it will work with my Motorola
too...

Thanks
Frank

Modem Sync was designed for exactly that - hooking your Palm to an external
PC modem to dial your home PC modem which talked your PC into performing a
HotSync. I've used Data cables with my Palm and cell phone to dial into an
ISP, but have never tried dialing directly to my home modem. Is your model
an OS4 or OS5 device? If OS4, is it running OS4.1?
Your cell phone is not a modem, per se. That may be why you're getting
the "No dial tone" error. For it to perform as a modem, you have to
enable the function through your cell provider; (read: Pay more money per
month). Have you done this? Can you connect to the web via your phone
either by GSM or GPRS?
Gotta admit, you have me curious. I'll give it a try.

Well, it worked the second try... But with the cheapo cell Data plan I have
it was e x c r u t i a t i n g l y slow! I pay $3.99/month to connect at
a whopping 9600 baud, which burns my daytime connect minutes (or free
unlimited if I call during off peak hours). But it does work! I had to
make sure the com port was free on my PC (XP multimedia was grabbing it to
monitor the Caller ID of incoming calls). I'm using a Sony Ericsson T616.

The slow connection works fine for grabbing emails and chatting via Aol IM
or Yahoo messenger. No "per message" charges.

Guess in a pinch I could just call home after peak hours and make sure my
Palm is plugged into a charger! But I'm seldom away from a PC, so when
camping I'd have to lug either a generator with me, or a battery pack...
:)

I got it working on mine too. I posted the details at comp.sys.palmtops
with the same subject.

Thanks for your input
