Is anyone aware of a firmware upgrade available for the NEC ND 1100A
DVD-Burner that will enable is to use 8X DVD+R blanks (I don't care if
it burns at faster than 4X but 4X media are gradually disappearing
from the market and all the 8X media warn that if your drive is not
compatrible wiuth 8X media, they might not work right). I have
installed the latest firmware upgrade from Dell and the description of
it makes no mention of media compatibility.
If you have such a firmware upgrade, please post the url.

Hmmm... wouldn't 8x rated media work fine at 4x? I think you might want to
match the media brand to the NEC first and if the 4x worked the 8x should
work too. At least that's my pure supposition.

Did you ever read the package of the 8X media. They specifically say
that burners rated at 4X without a firmware upgrade will deliver
unreliable results with those media. Apparently, the media are encoded
(unlike CD's which work like you say) and if the drive can't read what
type of media it is, the results are unpredictable.

tons of 4x DVD+R at www.newegg.com some of the 8x DVD+R says "8x max" so it all doesn't have the warning you
mention.
