I was looking more at the tech. info on the site, and I have a few more newbie questions! =) Smiley points go to anyone who can help fill in the n00b! =)

1) Now, the fastest Intel processor runs on a 533 FSB, while Athlon runs at 133 FSB, right? Or was it 266? Any way, how does the FSB differ from the System Bus? Because either way the System bus is still 133 or 100mHz it sounds like to me. Is the FSB, therefore, just the bus speed for the Processor and whatever it's DIRECTLY connected to then?

2) That thermal paste question I asked a little while ago is still on my mind... that's the most dire one at the moment I think.

3) I want to get into Linux, but I probably need my hand held... do you know of any good tutorials/references/walkthroughs for the OS on the 'Net? (probably not good for the CPU board... but I figure you guys are the most Tech saavy people I've met, so I'd pose it to you)

Anyways, that's it for now. Another round of Newbie Questions is sure to come! Thank you again for your help, not only have you been a great help but you've been wonderfully patient with me, which I appreciate greatly... sometimes people get impatient with my questions, and it's hard for me to learn. 1) Bus isnt constant throughout the motherboard. The QDR133(theoretical 533) of the P4 is basically just the speed to memory access/bandwidth. Then ya got PCI, AGP, and Hard drives that all run on a different BUS.....

Right it's 133FSB quad pumped or double pumped. Everything is connected to the system bus. Thats why they call it a system bus. And, thats why when you increase your fsb your overall system performance increases more so then if you just increased the cpu clock.

The higher the fsb, the more data can flow.

FSB and system bus means the samething if i remember correctly. Just think of it as 133 x 4 or 133 x 2 as what the system bus/FSB is.

How they can claim that it's "quad pumped" is that they can pass 4 sets of data in one cycle. so at 133mhz, at 1hert, it transferes 4 herts. ok? at 1mhz, it transferes data at 4mhz. same thing with double pumped.

For pentium 4's you don't have to worry about it. It has on die thermal protection. It's a smart cpu. Although by putting AS2 om my cpu (which is a pentium 4 2.0ghz) temps dropped 5 degrees celsius.

While it is true when you OC the FSB, you OC the rest of the system......the FSB is the Processors FrontSide Bus (processor data path to chipset), and not the same speed for the rest of the system. When you overclock, the PCI bus goes up, the AGP bus goes up.....but their clocks go up in relation to percentage of FSB increase, not in 1mhz to 1mhz incriments. So where you have a 533mhz chip to Chipset it doesnt mean you have a 533mhz to chipset for PCI Bus cards...they are 66mhz. The term "system bus" cannot be applied to any one bus speed. Theres local I/O bus, memory bus (same speed as proc bus when using matched speed memory to FSB, ie DDR266 and an AthlonXP), and there used to be a BackSide Bus, which is/was for off die cache...I left a link above detailing the speeds.

You dont have to worry about it frying, but installing a heatsink on any cpu without paste or a tim is retarded, on an athlon it can fry, on a p4 it can throttle, neither is a good outcome, ALWAYS USE PASTE/TIM!
