Cracked Monitor for HP Laptop

Hello, my daughter has a HP laptop and the screen is cracked. We don't know how to test if behind the screen is ok and then what screen or monitor to purchase and the tool we need and how to do it. Would really appreciate any help at all. Is there any websites or videos we can learn by? Big Thanks Jane G
