Hello all,
Im sure this has been posted a million times before but I need to ask again.

My friend and I are going to build him a new system very soon. We are just going to get him a new CPU, motherboard, memory, graphics card and a case w/power. He wants this new system to be able to run all the new games that are comming out. What do you suggest that he gets?

Thanks for you info friends,
Haljon

Bust on down to Evalias' thread, Building a powerful, affordable computer . We're having a grand ol' time down there. Tempers are rising, opinions fly through the air like arrows, shrill cries erupt like CPU temps after HSF removal (har har)... In short, it's a veritable battle, but you can get some great information. When you get to this thread, Haljon, I want you to close your eyes... Imagine the smell of blood, gunpowder, the clang of steel on steel... Picture in your mind's eye two banners - one says Intel Inside, the other proclaims AMD Forever! - and then listen to the screams of rage, the bellowing of the warriors! Ah, it makes you proud to be a THGC member, doesn't it? Seriously, you should go check the thread, there is a lot of good advice over there.

My Rig is bigger than yours.

Huzzah for Antec, AMD, and ASUS!!!

You need to post how much money you want to spend, or whether you care about money. If you don't care...I would wait a hair longer and do...

AMD Athlon XP 2600+
Gigabyte GA-7VAXP(KT400) Motherboard
512MB - 1GB PC3200 CAS2 DDR Memory
Maxtor 60GB 7200 ATA133 Hard Drive
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro Video Card
ANTEC Workstation Tower SX840 w/400 watt PS(or chieftec, a little cheaper, but nice)
Logitech Cordless Freedom Pro Keyboard
Lite-On 48x CD Burner
Lite-On DVD Rom

If you are more worried about money...

AMD Athlon XP 2000+
Gigabyte GA-7VRXP(KT333) Motherboard
256MB - 512MB PC2400 CAS2 DDR Memory
Maxtor 40GB 7200 ATA133 Hard Drive
ATI Radeon 9000 Pro Video Card(or GeForce 4 TI4200)
Chieftec Workstation Tower w/400 watt PS
Microsoft Natural or Standard Keyboard
Logitech Optical Mouse
Lite-On 40x CD Burner
Lite-On DVD Rom

All depends on how much you want to spend and if you have a preference to Intel or AMD. You can play around with a ton of configurations on newegg.com.

Pffff.... If he didn't care about money, I'd suggest

P4 2.8GHz
ASUS P4T533
512-1GB RIMM4200
RAID card
2x120GB WD SE 8MB cache in RAID
Lian Li w/ Enemax 431W/ Antec TruePower 430W PSU

If he really didn't care about money, he should look into a nice expensive 42 inch plasma screen to go with it.

Soon enough, Intel will make the i845s...imagine dual channel Sdram...*shudder*

god... if he REALLY didnt care about money he would get a 4 way Xeon with 8 gig of ram, R9700 overclocked and watercooled to buggery, and 15 Seagate 15k rpm SCSI drive is a mammoth raid array!

*Drools* How about an 8 way Xeon?

Knowledge is the key to understanding

Nah, that would REDUCE his performance, as none of these quad boards have good AGP performance. IN fact, most don't even have an AGP slot!
