Fatal Error when unplugging USB peripherals in ME

I have had this problem for a while ever since I unplugged a device during a Upgrade Advisor check.

Under Windows Me I made the mistake of unplugging a USB device whilst the XP Upgrade advisor was running. It coughed up a fatal error message and pressing a key would give me a black screen with a checkered line across the top. I had to press the reset button and now every time I unplug a USB device it gives me a fatal error message and locks up.

I changed my motherboard earlier this year and that did not help. How can I stop this problem?

You need to rebuild your USB subsystem...

Unplug all your USB devices.

Go into your win-Me hardware list, find your usb controllers, right click them and "remove" or "uninstall" them.

Next reboot the computer.

It will find and reinstall the usb controllers for you (you'll probably need the ME CD.)

After that reboot one more time.

Then reinstall all your USB devices.

If all goes well, that will get you back to normal.

Thanks for your input. I'll try your suggestions. I assume that when you mean Win-Me hardware list you mean the Device Manager. There is one slight problem.

I dont have a Windows Me install disc and no-one in my neighbourhood has Windows Me CD either. Do you know any websites in which I can download an UNMODIFIED version of the Windows ME full CD (the version for PCs without Windows)?

Ummmm... that would be just a tad illegal...

Anyway... hope it works out for you.

Do a Google search, for the problem you're encountering, others have had the same issues, and you can fix your problem, through the information available there. Regarding the WinME Full Installation question, why anyone would want to run WinME in the first place, is beyond me, Win98SE is a better choice, but you can find what you're looking for, through file sharing programs, everyone out here knows that, and that it also is illegal, the doorway is http://www.zeropaid.com, which filesharing program you use is up to you, if you go that route, Kazaa Lite is a favored among some, however ordering a legitimate copy from a place like http://www.directdeals.com, would be my reccomendation in what to do.
