which HSF should i get for an athlon xp 1900 that i want to buy? according to pricewatch, the xp 1900 cpu is about 80 bux. The retail is about is about 95 bux... but comes w/ the fan already. Which should I get? The retail w/ the fan and warranty, or the oem version? and if so, then which fan should i buy for the xp 1900? I am on a budget, so savin every $$$ counts.
That's a hard question to answer. First of all OEM's are cheaper but have no warranty. I've never had a bad CPU but have had a few bum video cards. If you're planning on running the chip as intended and the fan and sink combo adds a 3 yr warranty for 10-15 dollars more, you're better off with the warranty to play it safe. You can always buy a better sink setup and just toss the the fan in the back of your desk and get the warranty and be able to O'clock if that is your desire.
Save heating costs on your home, overclock your PC!!!
If you don't plan to overclock, get retail. It comes with a 3 year warrenty and you get a hsf. If you do plan to overclock, depending on how extreme you do it, you should get the oem and a good hsf. If moderate overclocking is your thing a Volcano 6cu+ or Volcano 7+ should be good.
we'll... i saw the THG video on oc'ing the ahtlon xp, so perhaps i may boost it up to the equivalence of the athlon xp 2000. Which HSF do u recommend for this? and a link of where to get it would be nice also.
OCing a 1.6GHZ chip to 1.66GHZ is nowhere hard, it's a matter of increasing the FSB to 139MHZ or 278MHZ, a mere 4.5% increase!
It'll be safe to OC by retail, I feel it so because it's such a small OC. Before doing so, just check your normal temps, if they are as low as in the 40s and do not touch 50, then go ahead do that small OC with Retail, it ain't gonna do nothing to your hardware!
I know someone here who OCed his XP1700 to XP2100 (around it) WITH RETAIL. Of course don't base any expectations on this, it is a rarity.

When buying an AthlonXP, please make sure the bus is at 133MHZ, or you will get a lower speed!
