I happened upon a free P4 1.4 Ghz and as I am normally a amd buyer I don't know whether its a 423 chipset or a 478. If someone could tell me where to go to see the different chipset sizes compared that would be great. (I think I remeber seeing that in one of the cpu guides on this site) All I know is its more rectangle than square.

I'm 99.99% sure that because it's a 1.4GHz chip it is a socket 423 since I don't think Intel even made any socket 478 1.4GHz P4s.

Thats what I thought too but I checked the intel support site and this is what I found under the data sheets:

http://developer.intel.com/design/pentium4/datashts/

I thought normally when a chip manufacturer goes to the next chipset they always jump up at least 100 mhgz but apparently not.

Freaky. So Intel technically did make socket 478 1.4GHz P4s. I'm still sticking with my 99.99% sure that it's a socket 423 though. Intel probably only offers it in theory, much like their Ultra Low Voltage Mobile Celeron. It supposedly exists, but good luck finding one or a system with it. Heh heh.

What does Pricewatch.com have to do with determining if a P4 1.4GHz is a socket 423 or a socket 487 or with finding an Ultra Low Voltage Mobile Celeron?

ok, let me say an obvious:

count the number of pins. you don't even need to do it accurately. if you end up close to 423 or 478, there u go.

Ok lets say, if even for a second I even thought about counting pins, what would you do, ask someone who might have an immediate answer or count pins? (423 of them) hmmm.. I think you understand!

lol.. i guess your reasoning backfired though huh?

the time it took to write your last post would almost be enoough to count it.

Too bad this forum doesn't have chat. Have you ever counted the pins on a cpu, cause if you have, my friend, you have alot more patience and alot more concentration than I would ever want to have. I guess I could count the number of pins on the length and width and multiply, I just thought there was an easy quick answer. I am just going with the 423 solution because it seems like the logical solution considering the person who built the machine.
