I have an Abit SA6 i815 motherboard which is rated up to 1GHz. I currently have a P3 866MHz in it. Is this maximum rating or just another manufacturers theoretical maximum. I.e can I buy a P3 1.2 or 1.4 GHz CPU and use it in this board???????? FYI: The 1.2 has 256Kb cache and the 1.4 has 512Kb cache. SO, CAN I UPGRADE WITHOUT HAVING TO BUY A NEW BOARD AND RAM OR NOT? PLEASE HELP!

Your board is designed for the older Katamai and Coppermine P3s, which if you're lucky, you can find up to a 1.13GHz Coppermine to toss into it.

The newer P3s are using the Tualatin core. They have different voltage requirements, and thus you need a new motherboard to support them.

However companies like Powerleap offer adapters which will allow you to theoretically run a Tualatin in older motherboards like yours because they do the voltage adaptation for you. So then, your limit may actually be one of the new P3 1.4GHz CPUs.

Yep, what he said. I would try overclocking that thing to 150MHz FSB, that gives you 975MHz and more bandwidth than a stock 1000EB. Of course, if you would like to see how well the latest Coppermine core 1000EB can go, look at the background of my webpage: http://www.crashman.dns2go.com
