Hi all,
I have not used the cross-over cable method of transferring data from an old pc to a new one but I am now faced with doing this on one of our work pcs.
What exactly do I buy and where do I put it? :)
Also will the old pc appear as another drive on the new one?

Just go to CompUSA and buy a cross over cable.

You must have client for microsoft networks and file and printer sharing installed in the network (along with TCP/IP). Depending on if they're 98 or 2000 or XP boxes, you can "share" a drive on one PC, then "map" that shared drive on the other.

It's always the one thing you never suspected.

i went to the tomshardware forums and all i got was this lousy signature.

Crossover via ethernet? Parallel? Serial?

If there's a lot of data to be transferred and both machines are 'standard' (ie both using IDE drives) I would also be inclined to remove the old HDD, plug it into the new PC and copy the data directly across to the new drive.
