I have a Xerox WorkCentre Pro 55 and need to scan directly to Word
instead of the built-in PDF-only option. I need to take printed
documents and get them in to an editable format that is excellent
quality. I contact Xerox and they said I need PaperPort. I am already
using a ScanSoft program (PDF Converter) to go from PDF to Word and the
quality is horrific. Does anyone else have experience with this and if
so, what is the best way to go about doing what I need to do? Thanks!

You need a good OCR Program that takes a scanned image (document) and
converts it to Editable text. Be aware that you will have to do some editing
because OCR is not perfect. OCR does not work on handwritten text.

The best ones are OmniPage Pro Or Abbyy Fine Reader.
Omnipage:

Abbyy Fine Reader: Look for Abbyy FineReader OCR.
