I just got UT2k3 at EB, and after playing it for 30 minutes with around 24 FPS on low detail I have decided that I really need to upgrade my CPU. I have had my computer (a dell, but the only original components are the CPU, Mobo, and some of the memory) and it only has an 800MHZ P3 cpu. The video card is a Radeon 8500, so I am sure that the CPU is the bottleneck.

I was wondering what a good deal would be for a CPU/Mobo combo. I'm intested in something that isn't super-top-of-the-line... I want the sweet spot. I don't care if it's AMD or Intel. I would look myself but I am afraid I'll end up getting ripped off (I really don't know what FSB really is nor do I know anything Mobo's). I don't wanna be like the guy in Best Buy who spends 800 bucks on a "top-of-the-line gaming machine" that only has a GeForce 2 MX because he doesn't know better. Also, any info on what kind of Ram to get would be great.

I actually get excellent performance on all the latest games I've tested with a PIII 1000EB and an old Radeon DDR using medium settings. Haven't tried UT2k3 yet though. Have you considered upgrading just the CPU or overclocking?

I just picked up a mobo/cpu at Fry's for only $99.95. It's an msi pro-2 kt266a board with xp1700 retail boxed cpu. I'm going to sell it to a friend at work, or keep it as a spare. He's running a p3-733 or 800 (an old e-machine) and he'll be glad to get it. They also have some generic pc2700 ddram for $59.95, but most will recommend you stick with crucial, samsung, kingston, or kingmax. I overclock my pc2100 generic at 333 by bumping the voltage to 2.7.
