i am thinking of purchasing a dual xeon s603 w/ 400mhz FSB. if i get this kind of system, i would be interested in overcolcking :). first of all, the mobo (Server Board SE7500WV2) im pretty sure can go up to 200 mhz fsb. so, 2.8 is at 100mhz fsb, so multiplier would be 28. that means i can overclock to 5.6ghz (per proc) so i can get a totalof 11.2 ghz processing power.

my friend ColKiwi is snickering beside me, telling me that the procs will solder themselves to the socket. Will this happen? cuz i dont want to poay $4000 for 2 pieces of charcoal. anyways, i was wondering what cooling i would need at various stages of overclocking. i also would need to increase voltage, eh? well, what kind of power supply would i need? would a 450W PSU do it justice (for 4 drives + 2 highly overclocked porcs). or would i need 700W PSU by enermax (my fave).?

say, if i oc'd them to around mid 3Ghz each, say:

FSB 133 * 28 = 3724 mhz * 2 procs = 7448 mhz.
what kind of coolig would i need?

also, how high can i go w/:
1) equipped cooler (prob. a heatsink and fan)
2) water cooler
3) LN2 :)

thx for all of your output in advanced.

at best even on water colling you will be able to running it at about 3.3 or 3.4.Also most of the boards dont offer overclocking option also.adding a cpu result in -5% to 50% increase in performance

I wont leak detail

First of all, it would be 3733MHz, as 133 is a continuous number (133.333....). Second, 2 processors at 3733 don't give you 7466MHz, not even 7466MHz of equivalent processor power. While some programs use both processors, most don't, and even ones that do only give you about a 25%-50% increase in performance, not 100%.

Finally, the 2.8 won't overclock to 3733MHz. No, you won't melt the processor, the system won't even fire up. You'd be blessed to receive 3200MHz from the gods of overclocking with the best of the best aircoolers. Maybe 3300MHz with decent water cooling. Maybe 3500MHz with evaporative cooling.
