Hello folks.

Would you be so kind as to help me answer a question?

If I need to get a computer on which I will do word processing, simple desktop publishing using a simple desktop publishing program, web surfing (56K or cable modem), and bitmap editing (of files up to 15 megabytes in size) using a medium simple bitmap editing program...

What will be the highest AMD Athlon and Intel Pentium CPU speeds I will need above which I will not see any further significant, noticeable and beneficial difference?

(I have been unable to clearly ascertain the answer to this question for myself from numerous online benchmarks and reviews.)

Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks much!

Oh, one more thing: I will not be overclocking this computer system.

Thanks again,

Bitmap editing screams out a P4.

But you'd save a little money going with an AMD system instead.

Figure a 1.6ghz p4, or a xp1500. $80 vs. $65.

P4's @ 3600Mhz ()wNz J00 4LL!!!!!!

im thinking any system over 1000mhz with decently fast ram you wouldnt be seeing much of a difference.
a XP1600+, some PC2100 ram (256Mb or greater) and a KT266A/KT333 Sis735 or 745 motherboard and you will be laughing!
cheap and very effictive.

You can do all that with a 7 year old Pentium 133. I recommend the cheapest computer you can find.

A Pentium 133 with Windows 95 and only 32MB of RAM runs things like Office97 and old bitmap editors at roughly the same speed as a PII 400 running WinXP/OfficeXP and 256MB of RAM.

The cheapest new systems you can find are all running at least 1GHz, far more than what you need even with the latest bitmap editors and office applications.
