Plan to get a new computer for a friend. With the $20 difference not being a concern, what would you recommend? As it states in the title no overclocking will be involved. So no p1.6 to 2.2 or p4 because it overclocks better. And assume that motherboard and memory price is not a concern. Which would be better, athlon xp2200 with 512mb ddr2700 or p4 2.2 with 512 pc800?

Hmmmm whatever I say I think this is potentially a confrontational thread :/

But as far as I am concerned I would pick Intel because I like their systems, nicer retail sink and easier to fit... PC800 Ram is a great performer.

But I think with the way you have phrased the question it sounds like you would be happy with either, so flip a coin :p

Why get a 2.2 when the 2.4 is about the same price. Also if you get some Samsung pc800, you can easily get pc1066 performance out of it without having to pay the hefty price of pc1066.

I'm really talking about performance. My friend mostly plays games. Which combination would be a better performer? No overclocking, he doesn't trust it, and I don't want to be responsible for his system burning out.

hey could get the XP2200+ with PC2100 ram instead. same some extra $$$ as we all know that using PC2700 gives only minor performance benifits, and PC2100 is quite cheap.
Those extra $$ could go towards a better video card, surely giving more gaming performance.
