If you are running windows 7 this becomes very easy. Just use Windows 7 back-up (it's in control panel, system and Security) make a image of your C drive onto a Backup USB Hard drive (or to DVDs) then as prompted make a bootable repair Disk. Put new HDD in laptop, run Repair disk and repair from Image. NO Re-install operating system, no re-install of programs - Poof like the majic dragon, every thing is on your new HDD including favorities.
