My 1800XP runs at 44 and the system is 33. But from what I've read the 2200 always runs hot. BTW I'm using OEM heatsink and fan.

Always listen to experts. They'll tell you what can't be done, and why. Then do it. MY RIG: http://www.btvillarin.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=327

If your system is stable, who cares what the temp is? I think there's too much obsessing over temps.

But, if you want to make sure your temps are as low as possible, make sure you're using Artic Silver on the HS. Rounded cables can also help drop temps a couple of degrees by increasing airflow.

FWIW, I just replaced the processor and motherboard in my machine. I'm now using an ASUS A7V333 mobo with an Athlon XP 2200+ CPU, so my setup is similar to yours. The CPU is running at 53 C right now, same as yours. I'm using a Vantec CCK-6040 fan/heatsink, with Arctic Silver 3, for cooling.

It's all fine right now, and I'm crossing my fingers it stays that way! I'm actually still a little nervous that something may be wrong, since my previous setup (a 500 Mhz Pentium) ran at only about 40 C.

Excessive ammounts of heat can and most likely will shorten your CPU's lifespan. I personally would take the heat issue very seriously. Unless you like to shorten the lifespan of components prematurely by all means go hard.
