Whats up guys!! I finally got my comp working!!! All i can say is it is awesome. THe sound alone is incredible with an Audigy and a set of Promedia 4.1's and the video quality is really good. I do, however have a few problems with my new setup. Its making me consider going back to 98SE as an OS. I did actually get some UT2003 Benchmarks the Flyby was 101 FPS and the BotMatch was 46 FPS at 1024x768 with 4x AA and 16x Aniso. I just installed 3dMark2001SE and i am waiting for the results of that as of right now. Hopefully they will be good.

I do have some problems though. Everytime i try to play a game the computer restarts or crashes back to windows. It doesnt usually do it right away but it will right when i get into games like WarCraft, MOHAA, UT2003, or Elite Force. I dont know if this is a quality problem from ATI, i do have a Radeon 9700 PRO, and i have never had experience with ATI in the past. I have the latest Catalyst Drives installed from Rage3D's site, they are BETA IIRC. I would just like to be able to play my games and i cant figure out whats up with it. It looks like a video card problem. Sometimes the screen will turn weird colors when it crashes. any suggestions as to what i should do? Do u guys need system temps or specs or anything like that?

 AGAIN THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP GUYS, COULDNT HAVE DONE ANY OF THIS WITHOUT YOUR HELP

Just from what I have read elsewhere, it sounds like a video card problem. I have heard many Radeon9700 users saying the exact same thing happens to them.

My guess is the situation will improve once ATI releases updates to their drivers. Who knows when that will be. =/

One thing you can try is running "dxdiag" (Start, Run, dxdiag). Run all the tests and see if something in particular locks up your machine. That'll tell you if something's up with DirectX.

Another thing would be to drop back to the previous driver version, if the current one is beta, as you mentioned.

I would go and get the drivers off ATI's site and use those. Rage3D will have betas, and will have other drivers that people have torn apart and put together on their own....they won't always be the best quality also......

Usually crashing after a certain period of time in games is caused by a heat problem. If you're certain your CPU is cool enough, it could be the RAM, Video Card, Power Supply, or even the chipset. Most likely of those four are the power supply and video card.

Thanks for the responses guys. I really appreciate it. It dies in 3dMark2001SE at the high res matrix benchmark. I do remember that when i was installing the OS a message came up a few times saying that windows was stopped to prevent damage to the system. It also said something about a physical memory dump and told me to contact a system administrator. I doubt its the psu, its a 431 watt enermax. I dont know the temps when my system is on a heavy load but when it boots up in the BIOS my case temp is 25-30 C and the cpu temp is 38-41 degrees Cel. I also have another question about the Radeon 9700's hardware configuration. In my device manager it says it has a Primary and Secondary Radeon 9700 Card. Is it supposed to say that or is that a problem? Today i am updating to SP1 for Win XP and i am reverting back to the original drivers on the CD to see if that helps out any. I will also download the drivers from ATI when i have the time. Thnx for all the help.

Im almost certain thats a memory problem........

I used to get that when i had PC-2100 DDR RAM and was Pushing it WAY to high..it would crash and give funyn colours on the screen..........mem physical dump...all ur symptoms......i got a Stick of PC-2700 DDR Samsung and it hasnt done it since.......so i guess make sure ur not overclocking for one.....and 2nd....try another stick of ram....

I don't know about the card showing up twice but it could be the way XP manages twin-view.

Anyway, the problems you had loading the system would also indicate the troubles I described above. While that particular power supply is not likely to cause problems, you could have a defective unit. More likely, it's a problem with the memory. I would download a good memory tester, go to the memory forum where such things are discussed, you'll likely find a download link.

Well, I tested the memory using memtest86 3.0 and i stopped the test after test number 6. I had only passed two of the previous tests and i already had 10002 errors in the test. Im guessin that this is not good. So I guess i have to RMA the 512 MB of PC-1066 with kington now. Thanx again for all the help guys. Ive had so many bad parts for this stupid comp so far its gettin kinda old. I hope all goes well after this. Thnx.

Did you get two 256's? Ask them if they'll replace it with 4 128's. Why? The 256's are supposed to be backordered for quite some time, and the 128's are not affected by the problem.

I already requested 2x 256 MB. Backordered? Is that like when they are out of stock? I dont mind waiting for another week maybe two, i just hope not longer than that. I also want to upgrade to 1028 in the future, if i need it. Thanks for the help. If the wait is long i will get the 4 128's.
