My current system is a 1gig celeron, 512 133SD ram, radeon8500. I use it for mostly games and i figure its time i upgrade the CPU and motherboard. I was looking at a athlon XP 2000 since its within my price range and fast enough i hope too =). Im only looking to spend around $150. I dont really want to upgrade my RAM yet since my friends got almost no gain from switching to DRR.

u have a fairly week cpu and platform for gaming, celeron is considered to be the worst when it comes to gaming cause of its reduces cache and fsb , also you have a GPU thats fast enough and ur celeron just cant scale with it(means ur graphics card is running at the speed of radeon 7500 untill u upgrade the cpu)i would recommend u a fast cpu ,fast hardrive and a faster ram for gaming probaly

AMD athlon xp 1800+ processor or higher
(NFORCE 2 chipset)LEADTEK K7NCR18D
MSI KT4 ULTRA (via kt400 chipset)or GIGABYTE GA-7VA (KT400)
MAXTOR DIAMOND MAX PLUS 9 with 8mb buffer
2 256 mb corsair cl2 ddr 400 sticks OR two 128 mb cl2 ddr 333 sticks from crucial

if you're price range is around AthlonXP 2000+ then go for it, and keep the Radeon 8500.

you will notice an increase in speed when you switch to DDR RAM the athlon's benefit more than celeron's from DDR, but if you can't afford it yet, then it's ok to leave it.

Of course you can't JUST replace you're CPU, you'll need to get a socket A motherboard for your CPU too.

bare in mind that the 2.0Ghz P4 is good value too.

Keep your RAM and graphics card. Add a 2000+ cpu and a motherboard supporting SDR memory.

My Recommendation:
GIGABYTE GA-7ZXE VIA KT133A CHIPSET motherboard: uses SDR memory; bios revision F2 and later supports Athlon XP; $51 at mWave

AMD XP 2000+ processor RETAIL $105 at NewEgg

Wow, you could have had 30% better performance simply by upgrading to a PIII at the same clock speed/133 bus speed. Anyway, XP prices are so low that you could get a 1600+ and MSI 745 Ultra for about the same price as a CPU upgrade for your current board so...
My recommendations are the 745 Ultra, 512MB PC2100 (or PC2700 if you can get a good price), and whatever XP processor you have enough money left for.

You're posting in a forum with class. It may be third class, but it's still class!

everyone is gonna have a preference as to what you should use in your system. For example, I suggest you build a motherboard out of legos. Then buy some craft clay and fashion a crude processor for it. It might not get a good benchmark, but you might win something at the local fair.

Get at least PC2100 DDR. PC133 SDRAM sucks.

My recommendations:

Athlon XP 2000+ retail
MSI 745 Ultra
Kingston 512 MB PC2100 CL2.5 DDR

Buy a 1600+ if you are running short of money.

Isnt this fun! i took the lego and craft clay idea but i was only getting about 7k in 3dmark so i replaced the clay with kraft dinner and that gave me a big performance boost.

Everyone has a differnt opinion but it all helps, thats why i post here. I looked at the getting the GIGABYTE GA-7ZXE VIA KT133A and an XP 2000 and it looks like a good deal. I dont supose overclocking will be too successfull but that hasnt stoped me before =)

That's in your opinion. Many others find it a good board at a cheap price. A KT133A board is too outdated. If he has extra money for the DDR mem, he should go for a KT266A board instead.

Go out and buy urself a ECS K7S5A Motherbaord...very CHEAP yet very GOOD...a lot of people will tell u about how crappy ECS is and how there full of problems..well it WAS true....they've fixed that problem......I Used to have a K7S5A and it ran beautifully the whole time i had it =) I sold it and got a DDR Only board though...but yea, your best bet is the Elitegroup (ECS) K7S5A which supports both SDRAM and DDR Ram, so u can pop in ur 512 of PC-133 SDRAM for now with an Athlon XP 2000+ and she'll run beautifully....And later on when u get a bit more money u can take ur SDRAM out and stick in some new DDR....its a full size ATX Board and is probablly the best money savign board there is......Overclockign is limited to SoftWare overclocking out of the box....BUT you CNA Download the Overclocking BIOS for that board and your set =)
