hi all
wanting a p4 setup..
whats the best intel 4 cpu to overclock?
judging by what tom says, its a 2.5ghz 100fsb cpu, but not with rambus.. any thoughts?
heres the link:-
also, memory whats the best to use? DDR 333 or DDR 400 ? what makes/models?
reason i want a P4 is performance, as by reading some of the 3dmark scores, they are upwards of 16000 possibly 17000 points, some over 20000 (only by extreme cooling overclocking tho i think..)
wanting a reasonable score, of about 18000, does anyone think its not possible? i have a gigabyte 9700 pro (maya 2 i think) and it overclocks ok, goes up to about 380/340 is this any good?
would love to hear from people about this..
thanks
ps also have asked question in motherboards, for a motherboard setup..
if all else fails... kick it and if it goes wrong, say it wasnt you...
The "But not with Rambus" thing is ABSOLUTELY WRONG, I think some BIAS was present on that part (Tom has to testify against Rambus in court not too long ago). Anyway, if you were to clock the 2.5A to 3.33GHz, your best performance would come from PC1066 RDRAM which operates at the same exact bus speed with the same exact bandwidth as the CPU bus.
If you want to go for second best, use PC3200. But the only chipset that properly supports PC3200 at 133MHz bus speed is the SiS 648, and the only GOOD SiS 648 board is the Gigabyte GA-8SG667. And that one is a little short on features.
Overall, expect your best performance to come with an RDRAM board such as the GA-8IHXP or Asus P4T533. Expect your best DDR performance to come with the GA-8SG667. And the difference to be around 5%.
Here's a bench from that same article that shows PC1066 almost 10% better than PC2700 http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/02q3/020826/p4_2800-16.html

hi
i have noticed whilest reading some reviews from amandtech that these boards have come up in them..
so you say that rambus is a good thing? are there any particular memory moduals to use or any will do?
im not so worried about the cash side of things, par say, but i dont want to go nuts..
your saying theres a 5% difference in the performance between the asus board with rambus and the gigabyte board with ddr333? what about the gigabyte board with ddr400? is there more than a 5% cost difference between the two memory types/boards etc? if so, which would you choose?
if all else fails... kick it and if it goes wrong, say it wasnt you...
It is best to use DDR with the B stepping chips (133FSB) and RAMBUS with the A and the C stepping with 100FSB like the 2.5A and 2.6A.
I agree with Crashman on the Rambus, but with DDR I favor the ABit IT7 MAX. The best overclocker board on the market.
I am one of the people you speak of on madonion page 1, I run extreme cooling and yet to break 19K
P4 2.66 @ 3.4Ghz 169FSB 42PCI/82AGP Dangerden waterblock
R9700 @ 418/712 volt modded 2x, ramsinks, and DD waterblock
Corsair PC3500C2 @ 456Mhz 2-6-2-2 E off
750GPH Little Giant sub-pump in a 5.7" freezer/chiller that maintains close to zero temps. I also run custom air cooler in the case @ 262CFM
If you want a machine that will compete on page one you will need a IT7 MAX and a 2.8Ghz P4,plus your radeon 9700 and a stick of PC3500C2 Corsair. That should get you over 18K
Well, it really varies depending on benchmarks. The difference between PC1066 and PC2700 performance is 5-10%, and the difference narrows to 0-5% with PC3200. Now it gets tricky for comming up with an overall difference, since a lot of people like me would round to the nearest 5%, but I'd say probably around 6% with PC2700 and 3% with PC3200, below PC1066, as averages.
I had an 8IHXP system all picked out but the order process got screwed and I gave up. Here's a good way to look at it:
PC1066 will beat anything DDR when the PC1066 is clocked between 533MHz and 600MHz. 600MHz comes at 150MHz bus clock.
A lot of i850E boards come with clock generators that are limitted to 150MHz clock. Aopen makes some that use 258MHz clock generators, but I can't find any test info on them.
If you choose to go DDR, the GA-8SG667 appears to be the most efficient board. Fugger likes the IT7 I think because it runs stable at super high bus speeds. So even if it's a couple percent worse than the 8SG667 at equal speeds, it likely reach higher speeds, more than enough to make the difference. Personally, I wouldn't be overclocking beyond 166MHz bus anyway.

Crashman is correct, when breaching 166FSB you will be on par with PC1066. I have pushed beyond PC1066 bandwidth with far less latency = better solution. I am an exception to the rule as I use extreme cooling methods to maintain 3.4Ghz all the time.
Extreamly stable at very high speeds, Some games I will play for 10~12 hours straight and one thing I really really hate is when a machine crashes during a game. I will not tolerate it and dump the machine in a heart beat.
I tried to move to the P4S8X, P4T533, P4PE and all were kicked to the curb. Im back on the IT7-MAX and the P4PE is back in the box until the 3.06 is released.
Hi,
I have oc problem with ga-8ihxp i hope somebody can help here...
I would like to use the integrated sound chip but it seems it does not work when the board is overclocked. Is it a driver bug or i should use a pci sound card instead?
I thought the abosolute best overclocker in terms of % gained were those Uber rare P4 1.8A's with C0 or C1 stepping?

Hmmm. Point. Damn intel. Cheapass crap. *shakes fist comically at all the P4's locked away in dell boxes*
