I have a MN700 connected to a Motorola SB5100 cable modem
(runnig Shaw's Extreme speed). If I disconnect the
router I get an average download speed of 4500 Kbits/s.
If I put the the router in line, my download speed drops
to 2000 Kbits/s. I have firewall enanbled, WEP...all
enabled.

Anyone have any thoughts, or should I expect a 50%
performance hit? I don't think I should expect such a
hit.

No, I don't have any idea. I have Comcast high speed residential and I can
get speeds in excess of 9Mb coming down.

WEP will slow down your speeds.

It's not the WEP slowing you down as much as the firewall
being enabled. Not sure which site you are running the
speed test on, but I know some/most prefer you to disable
any firewalls and or anti-virus.

That is pure nonsense. Keep the firewall up and anti-virus software
running.

Agreed, never let your guard down. Especially with Windows.

Don't kid yourself that having a Mac automatically protects you. The idiots
on the web also write bad guys for Macs, too, but it is less pronounced
because of the low percentage of Mac users.
