Win XP home prob. Error message?
Sigma
Suddently when i startup win xp or restart my cpu, windows boots up and on the screen i see an open ms dos 16 bit window with an error message sayine, " Windows/appl_.exe; the NTVDM CPU encountered an illegal instruction; then a bunch of numbers" it says to either close or ignore. What is this error and how do I get rid of it? I tried system restore but i had no restore points prior to this available to restore to.

That doesn’t help! I tried to find something that might help, but had little luck. About the only thing I could find was this, but I don’t know if replacing the Command.com is a good ideal, because it’s not even concerned to WinXP.
In Toey’s first link I notice SUMMARY
This article describes how to troubleshoot MS-DOS-based programs in Windows. about half way down the page. I know you tried typing in the command.com, and it wouldn’t close, it wouldn’t for me either, so I don’t think that’s a problem.
I also seen: >Prevent all programs from running at startup. Programs can run from three places at startup: the Startup groups, the Run and RunOnce lines in the registry, and the "run=" and "load=" lines in the Win.ini file. You can check these places as follows:< So all I can think is to follow what it says there, about the only chance I see to get rid of the error.
Other things I might try would be to use RegScrub sorry best I could find.
Also, spybot and RegCleaner be careful with reg cleaner, if I’m not mistaking you want to be darn sure you know what you are deleting or you could be in trouble.
