Finally scraped up enough money to get a new CPU to upgrade my Duron 850.

Question is what should I go for?

I have a choice of AMD T-BIRD 1.333 GHZ Version C for $109 Australian $.

or

Athlon XP 1600 for $123AUD.

I'm not particularly interested in overclocking but if I was, which would be the best choice?

My bits pertaining to CPU are:

ECS K7VZA Motherboard
256mb SDRAM (board doesn't support DDR)
Windows XP Pro - Service pack 1
Gainward Geforce2 Mx400

Thanks in advance

Your best choice would be a new motherboard. your current one doesnt support either of the cpu's you mentioned, as it doenst support 133/266 FSB. Like I suggested in another thred with the exact same question, get an ECS K7S5A motherboard for $52 (US$). It will take your sdram, and any Athlon XP.

If you insist on upgrading your cpu, buy the 1.333 if its unlocked, or unlock it and run it at 100x13 or 100x14 (not the default 133x10). Dont expect any miracles though

Thank's for the reply bbaeyens.

I hope my board can support XP because ECS reckon it can:
http://www.ecs.com.tw/support/cpu_k7.htm.

The motherboard manual also states that "the mainboard has a socket 462 to accomodate AMD Athlon processors that support FSB speeds up to 200/266MHZ.

Hope it can or I will be bummed!

Are you sure you have the rev3.0 ? If so, go for the Athlon XP. If not, get a new MB.
