I just removed my loud ass Cooler Master HCC 002 heatsink and installed a quieter Volcano7+. Well after installing the new heatsink, my computer won't start up. I used artic silver 3 as the thermal compound, so its not like i didnt use any so that aint the problem. Heres what my computer does, I press the power button, the fans turn on, and the computer beeps 2 or 3 times, followed by a long beep then everything turns off. Please help, I dont know if i shorted my cpu, or if this is an automatic safety that I didn't turn off. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

ooooh doesn't sound too good to me !
Have you tried clearing the CMOS ?

It sounds like you may have crushed the core either when removing the old sink or attaching the new one :/

Or maybe you didn't seat the Volcano flush with the core and it burnt out ?? did you smell burning ?

Have you got your motherboard manual it will tell you what the Error beeps mean... may just be a loose AGP card or memory ?

You should also be able to get the beep codes from the bios manufacturer,or post the brand and someone should have them...

If ya don't ask..How ya gonna know.

PHEW!!!...I really did think I fried my CPU last night. But after about an hour of studying the circuit and consulting the MB manual, i found out that the computer kept shutting of because of the CPU fan fail safe. If a fan isn't hooked up (in my case hooked up properly) to the CUPFAN1 slot on the MB, it automatically shutdown all power to prevent the CPU from burning up into a little ball of flame. Thanks for suggestions. I feel so sheepish, but greatly relieved.

THanks again
