Alright I know I should be asking this question in here but i'm just not getting any help from the cd writer forum.
My problem is this, I have a pioneer 104 dvdrw, its really pissing me off. The only way I can get it to burn suceesfully is to drop it in pio 4 mode, the problem with doing this is it takes over an hour to burn a dvdr. However when it is set in dma mode it goes along fine, untill it gets to about 20% and bam the read buffer slams straight down to 0% and it comes up with the message pioneer a104 comunication error , aborted then it throw out the disk half burnt.

should look into a firmware upgrade. go to their site and read the faqs and stuff.

DVD Burners are still very new. What you bought was a risk.
Rule with any tech is to not buy anything new for 6 months.

For brand new tech on the market i'm finding 2 years wait is a good wait.

Life is irrelivent and irrational.

According to <A HREF="http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/54/27163.html" target="_new">this</A> you chose a DVD burner that has known overheat problems. You could try upgrading the firmware from <A HREF="http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/hs/pioneer.html" target="_new"> here</A>. Good luck.

I already have the latest firmware upgrade it was the first thing I tried, the problem with overheating should not affect me as I am only burning at 2x and am not using 4x discs

Some burners do not operate properly in DMA mode. And must be run in PIO mode . Could be that this is your problem. Check your manual and see if your burner supports DMA mode. If it dosen't it will not operate properly in DMA mode. And must be run in PIO mode.

I aint signing nothing!!!

It does support dma mode, but only seems to run happily in pio mode, i wouldn't mind running it in pio mode, but it seems it will only burn at 2X in dma mode. I'm really starting to run out of ideas now, I did have it set up as the master with my dvd rom being the slave, now I have disconnected my dvd rom and its running on its own IDE channal to see if that would make a difference. Its connected with an 80 wire cable, could it be that it doesn't like 80 wire cables, or could it be that it likes to run in slave mode???????????. Anyone who owns on of these drives your input and experiece would be greatly appriciated.

Or could it be that I've bought a Sh't drive.????????. I have read very good reviews about this drive, and all the comments from people who own on have all been positive.

I have found the solution, this drive will only work in dma mode if connected with a 40 pin ide cable, it just doesn't like 80 pin ide cables. It now runs very happily in dma mode and I can throw dvd's out in 30 minutes, I'm so happy.
Thanks for all the suggestions I got there in the end

Actually in some ways we need to thank you for being the 'guinea pig' and help point out some of the potential problems we could incur when we move to new technology.

It shouldn't make any difference if you use a 40 or 80 conductor cable on optical drives. Most likely the 80 conductor cable you were using was defective.
But I sympathize with the frustration you have experienced. Nothing worse than having a brand new $500 piece of hardware you think is not worth what you paid for and it turns out to be a $5 part that caused all your grief.

I only changed it to a 40 pin because after trawling round the web I saw an installation guide that said pioneer recommend a 40 pin ide cable, funny that there was nothing on their web site about it or in the manual. I actually tried two 80 pin cables and they both did exactly the same thing. I find it very hard to believe that I have two defective cables especially as one is running both my hardrives absolutly fine and has done for the past year.

That is definitely weird.
I have my DVD ROM and CD-RW connected to an 80 conductor cable. Both are high speed drives. The next time I upgrade my drives I will use the 40 conductor cable supplied.
