I just installed a new AMD Athlon 2000XP+. I used the supplied (with cpu) heatsink and fan. Asus Probe software shows quiescent cpu temp at about 47 deg C. It goes up max to 50 deg C during intense gaming.

This OK? Asus Probe overheat is 67 deg C, the lowest setting I can put it on for alarm.

Is the 50 deg C temp ok? Or is it worth getting something like a Volcano 6 or 7?

Ok, let's go:

a) As long as your computer don't freeze, lock up, etc. you do NOT have to worry.

b) Use Motherboard Monitor instead of Asus Probe. It's better and Asus software is known for reading higher temps. MM is what everybody uses to read computers temps, fan speed, etc. (and set alarms is you want).

c) If you plan your overclock you computer, then going for a better HSF make sense. If not, retail heatsink and fan is PERFECT.

d) Also search in past threads and you will see the same.

That is a good average temp for that CPU. If you are not going to over clock, then dont mess with it. Take care.

Hang in there. It can only get better!
