Hi folks,

I am about to buy my first Palm Pda.
Can anyone recommend me a real good one?

Intention of usage:
1) Keep track of expenses.
2) Keep track of appointments.
3) Keep track of to-do-list.
4) Working on excel, words and ppt.

All PalmOS devices I've used can to the above...

You need to go and play about with the cheapest one, moving up the scale,
until you find the one for you. The Tungsten E2 is a good place to start.

Don't you find 250.00 for a Tungsten E2 (according to PalmOne) a bit
expensive for a starting point to "move up the scale"?

Any PalmOS PDA will do this, as long as it comes with Documents To Go
from www.dataviz.com which, in reviews, has been found to be superior
even to Pocket Word and Pocket Excel on the Pocket PC machines.

However, you may wish to restrict your search to OS5 version Palms, as
the current version of DTG only works on OS5 machines. I do have an
earlier version of DTG on an OS4 Palm (Tungsten W), so if you can get
DTG bundled with the PalmOS machine you buy, you're in good shape.

And, as to the post from "DervMan"

DervMan seems to have overlooked your Excel, Word and PPT requirement.
The E2 is the least expensive Palm with the DTG software bundled. And,
It frequently sells for much less than list:

Two fifty what?

They're around the one fifty here... £150 that is...

I guess it depends on what you're coming from. My Tungsten W was around the
£175 point.

Yes. It's the software and not the device.

Nah that one wasn't from me...

As previously pointed out, all palmOS devices can do all of these
things, but not all include the software in the box to accomplish
them.

The first three are included in the box in all palms, but the
"Expenses" tracker is more oriented towards business travellers than
if you're trying to use it as a checkbook-style app.

Excel, Word and Powerpoint syncing requires third-party software.
Most of the higher end-palms (I think someone said TE2 and up) come
with Documents to Go software that does this. If you choose a palm
that doesn't come with this software, datavis.com will sell you
Documents to Go to you for about $50 or so. There are other
alternatives like QuickOffice Premier from Iambic.com ($40).

I think you need to be more specific about your needs and budget if
you want much more detailed advice on models. I, personally, would
suggest looking at some of the lower end models like a Zire 31 or
Tungsten E. (I gather the latter is discontinued, but may still be
available some places).

As already pointed out, any palm can do the first 3.
To work with large excel files, you need one with at least 16M of RAM.
The Hanspring Neo, now out of production but still found occasionally on
eBay, would be the minimum.
For ppt, you will probably wont colors. A Zire would do. Margi has a
(not-so-cheap) card that fits in the SD slot to connect directly to a
video projector.
IMO, no palm or any palmtop would be suitable for reasonnable word
processing. Even with an external keyboard, the screen is too small.
