With the recent price drops of the XP series, I want to upgrade my Duron 900. Question is, which one? I have a ECS K7S5A mobo and 256k Crucial PC2100. Considering going as high as a XP2100, but can save $40+ getting an 1800+ instead and upgrading higher in the future. Thoughts?

Well, I'd buy the fastest thing you can afford, being that it's at a reasonable price of course. Most anything will offer a improvement over a duron 900. Also I don't know about that board and chips over 2200+?

According to the ECS website, the K7S5A is compatible with the .13 XP Thoroughbred too...at least I think thats what it means...

Yes... Any XP ranged CPU would be a good choice. The XP1800+ is a decent inbetween model.
if i were you I would also consider buying an extra 256Mb ram.

Having more ram will keep all those apps and games running efficiently. (Especially if you play alot of games)

if you goto Pricewatch and take a look at the CPUs the XP2100+ seems to be the sweet spot as far as price performance goes, but these prices are constantly changing, everything else seems about right.

Maybe this begs the next question, Retail or OEM? You dont get the 3 yr warranty with OEM do you? And do the retail fans suck or are they decent and fairly quiet? THanks for all the good advice.

Retail doesn't cost much more than OEM but has a 3 year warrante vs. 1 year. Still I would invest in a GOOD HS and fan even if you get retail. (Volcano 7+ or 9) Good luck. Take care.

Hang in there. It can only get better!

I run the 1800Xp with the stock HSF. Never gets above 49 degrees under full load. You won't be able to overclock with this setup though.

How about the Volcano series? Are they quiet? Are the stock HSF noisy? Excessive noise is a big factor for me. How much do the Volcano cost?

Also, I only have a 300W PSU. Probably should go up to 400(+)? Any recommendations on a good QUIET PSU?

Try with your current PSU first; it it doesnt work, or is unstable, get a better one. these ECS boards are very sensitive to good quality PSU's. I know.. I've had a few
