I wanted to ask anyone else that has read about toms post on the new cpu's from Intel. I wanted to point out that most people that dont know a alot about the P4's compared to AthlonXP see an AthlonXP2800+ compared to Intel Pentium4 3.06ghz as almost equal. I noticed that tom usualy doesn't include infomation that the Pentium4 compared to Athlons using AMD's mesuring tool compared to puting a Ghz lable. We are comparing a AthlonXP2800 thats 2250Ghz if I have my numbers correct to a Intel Pentium4 3.06Ghz. I see that if AMD had a cpu out that was 3ghz it would spank that Pentium 4 in almost every test minus any programs that like the Hyper Threading. I wonder what others opinions are when you compare the new Hammer coming out with the 3.06ghz Pentium4 with HT. I wonder who will be on top..

No one has seen the XP2800+

The 2700+ OEM just hit the streets

HT will prove itself fast as people understand how it works.

I am saying that people are comparing the athlons at a less clock speed to pentium 4s with higher clock speed and faster memory. if we could just compare pentium 4 to a athlonxp of both 3.06ghz with the same speed ram i wonder the outcome of the tests.

They have never compared Athlon to P4 in clock speed. That is because so far everyone knows that the Athlons do more in one clock cycle than the P4s.

First off you can buy the 2800 333FSB and the asus A7N8X, which supports the 2800, from newegg, not preorder, they have it in stock, making what THG said about AMD's only competitor being the 2600 incorrect. Even if the 2800 was not out, the 2700 is. Also, the point that an actual 3ghz anthlon XP could spank a 3ghz P4 is more or less common knowlege to the techy type. However, AMD has not produced a 3GHZ chip so we only can compare best to best. I am interested to see what the clawhammer can do, but am still skeptical. For now THE P4 3.06 HT is the top dog, however it costs about $720 comapred to the 2800's $410. Not taking into account motherboard cost. On a side note, I find that the P4 HT being able to multi-tasks well not a huge deal. while it is a step up from the P4's lack of, AMD's chips naturally handle it well. I was watching video On a 1900+ while rendering a 900k poly scene in 3dsmax. The render probably took a performance hit, but it worked none the less.

They always do this because that AMD's and Intel's products were not the same since Athlon.Athlon can do more than P4 at the same time.I think HyperTherading can help P4 to improve its performance, but it need software supporting the new technology. At first,Hammer will be the winner, then after soft can support HT,P4 will be better. But at last, when the 64-bit comes,AMD will be the top it never reached before.

I want HAMMER but I can only afford celeron

Yet another "mine is better" thread. I don't know why people focus so much on clockspeed. It's not like there's a limited supply of it and you must conserve it or something. You don't pay per MHz anymore than you pay per HP on a car. Would a 3 GHz Athlon perform better on average than a 3 GHz P4? Most likely. Will an Athlon ever make it to 3 GHz on the .13 micron process without exotic cooling or a compromise in stability? Probably not. It's like saying would a Ford Taurus with a 550 HP V10 Porche Carrera engine beat a stock BMW Z8 with a 394 HP M5 engine. Well......ya, but do you see such a Ford around?

I agree this is a futile discussion. Intel has much faster speeds, Athlon has a 'better' architeture that allows for better performance at lower Mhz speed. What's the real point? There is none, since we cannot do a mhz to mhz comparision since AMD doesn't have a true 3.06 it doesn't matter. Although I personally prefer the Athlon's and the longevity of the K7 architeture, if I was out only for performance and needed the absolute fastest, Intel and Rdram is the only way to go. Fact is though, most of us end users don't need that.

I like the HT theory. I like the fact that it makes better use of the cpu cycles and wastes less of them. I like the fact that 3Ghz has been broken in the 'real world'.

I dislike the fact that it's 700 for this CPU. I dislike the fact it requires(for many) the latest OS's. I dislike the fact that many P4 owners need the latest greatest chipsets to fully use it. I dislike the fact that in Warcraft or Mafia it won't do me much good.

All in all it's a nice boost. It's also not worth to me to spend that much on a CPU. Nor do I find the 2800+ worth $400 to me.

Since scaling of speeds is still on a relatively fastrack my money is on something around the 2.2 to 2.5 range if I were to upgrade right now. For now my XP1900(which is overclocked from a 1700) does me just fine. I'm also sure that most P4 owners running the 2.2+ models are quite satisfied with what they have as well.

A year or two from now I'm sure I'll have a HT or similiar style CPU setup. For now, I can't accept the high price tag.

I noticed the 2800+ pop up yesterday on newegg, and they cost a mint for OEM's

I tried to get back on THGF last night and the site would not load to correct myself.
