Just wondering what element of my PC should be upgraded next. In particular I'm thinking about whether my ram could be causing a bottleneck, and maybe I could potentially be wasting money getting a new cpu.
My system is-
P4 1.7 (256k cache)
MSI 845 Pro 2 Mainboard
512 MB PC133 RAM
MSI GF4 TI 4200 (64 MB)
WinXP/WinMe dual-boot
SB Audigy
Two 40 GB ATA-133 HDDs
So I could spend £180 on a P4 2.4, or £190 on a new Mainboard and some DDR ram. Needless to say, my current board only takes PC133 ram which is starting to look a bit antiquated compared to the other components.
Any ideas which of these upgrade would make the most difference?
The most noticeable difference would be a cpu upgrade. As you say the RAM is the most glaring weak link but if you upgraded the ram and mobo now you would not see anywhere near the performance jump you would with a faster cpu.
Wait a while before upgrading. Once you have enough money get a new mobo/cpu/ram combination. Your system seems fine for all but the most demanding games. They'll still run too, you'll just have to lower some of the settings.
It can be only one thing if you have a P4, you memory is way too weak, for a P4 you should either be using DDR of RDRAM. The move to more powerful memory is like getting a brand new computer. So that means new motherboard, but the price of motherboards is constantly dropping, check PriceWatch.com
