My system recently began freezing every time I try to convert an mp3 or wma file. It was able to do this with no problem when I first put it together, so I'm thinking that there isn't enough thermal paste on the CPU anymore. Does the paste have a tendency to "evaporate" or something? Can I just rip off the heat sink and slap some more on there? Is this even the correct diagnosis to begin with? Any help y'all could offer would be greatly appreciated...
Post your system specs and operating temperatures (using MBM or Bios) both at idle and under load.
The thermal paste does not evaporate and you only need a very thin amount.
Get the latest MBM5. It has an option to track CPU load as well as temp and voltage. That would be the next step I would do before ripping the HS off your CPU. Download MBM then post your temps, volts and CPU usage. Then we can go from there. Take care. Good luck.
OK
a quick question wot o/s ru using?
I have been told not 2 use thermal paste as if there is a problem with the CPU AMD wont take them back wot u shud do is get a kick ass fan rated well above your cpu so the fan shud componsate for no thermal paste. Any one else been told this?
Does your system only lock up when doing the MP£s or does it doit at other times as well?
i'm running windows xp home ed., it seems to only lock up when i'm converting files to mp3 or wma, and it's not just one program. it's happened while using windows media player, winamp, and roxio. it doesn't look like the processor is too hot, but i never get a chance to look at the mbm screen when trying to make mp3s because it freezes up too quickly. i'm not exactly sure which numbers are important and whether or not i configured the software correctly (syk99 = mbm n00b), but i posted a screen capture at http://members.aol.com/maysnblew/cap1122.jpg.
Syk, just make sure you haven't got the bios to shutdown at a low temparature, this occasionally doesn't work to well and could be what is causing the system to lock up. If this is the case turn off the temp protection and see what happens, just make sure your cooler is attached properly and that it is sufficient to cool down the processor.
i'll give it a shot... it's weird though... today i took the cover off the case and it didn't freeze 'til it had finished converting about five five-minute mp3s (normally it quits after about half of an mp3). i wonder if the improved circulation has anything to do with it.
You should also make sure any chipset drivers that came on the motherboard cd are properly installed, this has become less of a problem since Windows XP came out but I have still heard of this giving trouble .... try download a cpu stressing program to get the heat up on the processor another way, if it locks up you're one step closer to making sure it's a heat problem.
A point everyone has missed is that syk99 did manage to get a cpu temp through the bios. He said 59 degrees. That is extreamily hot. You have a problem somewhere around the cpu cooler. Make sure the fan on the CPU cooler is working and if it is take off the cooler clean off the bottem and reseat it WITH thermal paste. Thermal paste is a MUST if you dont want to void your cpu warranty. Oh and someone commented that AMD told him not to use thermal paste otherwise they wouldnt take it back. Thats a load of crap. In my own warranty papers it says that if I take the cooler off the cpu you must clean off the wax and replace it with thermal paste. It does say that if you dont have something either the original wax or thermal paste THAT voids your warranty. Not that it really affect me though with unlocked bridges. AReA_51
that is a touch warm. might or might not be causing problems converting sound files but i doubt it. It is a good job you checked though as you should probably do something about it.
