Dell laptop inspiron e1505 screen going black

Dell lap top Inspiron E1505 Screen goes black when I walk away 5 minutes, sometimes will come back on if I click mouse - otherwise have to push start button again. Did I accidentally hit a key that puts it in sleep or stand by mode?

no, your computer is set to go to screen saver then turn off monitor after 5 minutes and automatically goes to sleep after that.
To adjust you need to adjust power settings (can be accessed from Control Panel)
The 3 settings you're looking for are
turn off monitor - timer - this is the time when monitor goes black instead of screen saver
Sleep - timer - this is when computer goes to sleep
