I'm looking to buy a processor for a VALUE computer that will NOT be used for games. I want at least an athlon 1700 (i will not be overclocking ever), but for $9 more i can get an 1800, for $23 more a 2000, etc. I'm hoping to keep the computer cost under $500, and right now i have a full system for ~$470 w/ an athlon xp 1700. should i get a better processor? Which athlon xp is the best performance/dollar
I know that last week the best price/preformance Athlon chip I could find was the 1900. What you really need to do is look at the prices and see where the biggest price jump is, then pick the chip just below the jump.

Right now you can get the XP2100 for $87, that puts you at about $55 over your budget, or the XP2000 for $74 that puts you at about $45 over. if it was me i'd definately get atleast the XP2000+ because the "2" in that number is so pretty, lol!
If you're looking for value, you cannot beat a retail 2100+ for $98 shipped from googlegear. For $65 you can score an 1800+ OEM also from goooglegear, for the extra $33 though, the retail 2100+ it a great buy right now.
Performance wise, I am looking at the 2600+ w/333 FSB, though it's about $175 more at $287.
