Intel i3 vs AMD Phenom Quad Core

Can anyone tell me which process is better between the Intel Core i3 370M(2.40GHz) and the AMD Phenom II Quad-Core N970(2.2GHz)?

I know that the i3 is slightly more powerful but it has 2 cores. The AMD is less powerful but has 4 cores. So which one is better?

Thanks.

I wanted to know which one is better at running programs faster and multitasking.

It's hard for me to tell because the clock speed is similar and I don't think that .2ghz will make much difference. Wondering if the amount of cores matters at similar clocks.

The laptop with the AMD processor is cheaper by about $50. Price isn't an issue though.

Having 4 real cores often is better. "Cinebench R10: Rendering Single CPUs 64Bit" is the only benchmark that's faster on the Intel. All benchmarks that can take advantage of all cores or threads seem to run faster on the AMD. Other than the CPU, are both laptops identical (display resolution and quality, disk sixe, etc.)?

The main difference other than CPU is the Acer for $450 has 6gb of ram, 500gb hdd, and no HDMI connector.

The Acer for $400 has 4gb of ram, a 320gb hdd, and an HDMI connector.

The rest is identical. Personally I don't care that the more expensive one has more ram because I can easily upgrade it myself for about $20. I also don't care about the 500gb hdd. I think that 320 is more than enough for a laptop and I have over 3tb storage on desktop.

I want to know which one will give better performance.

Here is the Big List of Mobile Processors (CPU Benchmarks)
The CPUs are ranked in order of best overall performance.
Find the 2 CPUs in your choices and compare them.

How important is battery life to you? Neither one is especially good - 3hrs.

Thanks.

I compared them both. I'm not very familiar with these bench mark scores. Is a higher number better or worse?

According to GhislainG, Cinebench R10 32Bit Single is the only faster thing about the intel.

But I also see wPrime 32, wPrime 1024, Dhrystone, and Whetstone having higher scores on the intel.

So which one is better?

Battery life isn't important. I just want to know which processor will perform better. I'm not very familiar with the AMD processors. I'm not a computer noob. I've built several systems all with intel i7s. So I don't have a good idea of performance when it comes to these two processors.

SuperPI lower score is better. wPrime lower score is better.

It will probably come down to how you use the laptop and what programs you run most.
That notebookcheck benchmark is probably an 'average user' and not someone running all multi-threaded apps like audio and video encoding.

5 out of 8 benchmarks are better on the AMD yet its number 89 on the list while the intel is number 79.

There are many other benchmarks available and not all are displayed on the chart.

It depends on the weight applied to each benchmark. Unless you buy both and run them at the same time, you won't know the difference. Buy the one that best meets your requirements.

Ideally you'd want to be able to look over some independent reviews to check things like thermal and acoustic performance, keyboard 'feel' and LCD quality and other intangibles that the specs alone don't cover.

Google isn't turning up any useful reviews, not even in the same series, let alone the same model. Not even customer reviews @ NewEgg.

Yet the processor is much worse than both laptops. Only thing it really has is a bluray drive. I already have a bluray burner in my desktop with 16gb ram, 3tb storage, and an ssd. This is not worth the extra money.
