Ok I have decided to build a new system and was finally decided on everything.

Now I have a question which will be best waiting for Dual-ddr (will these boards be as stable as i850E chipset?? will it out performm RDram pc1066??? I know the bandwidth is the same but will it out perform in real life??

Also for the same price of memory I can get 1GB of pc2700

will there be a bios update to the mobos to acept this or not?? or will pc2100 be the max

please help

I think that the Springdale Chipset is going to support DDR400. You are talking about the Granite Bay mobos, this chipset will only support DDR266 and it outperforms RAMBUS PC1066 in some diciplines.
Sis 648 chipset will also support dual channel DDR2700!

You mean 655 ofcourse, SiS655 will officially support DDR333 Pc2700 and might be able to run mem at DDR400...have to wait for the reviews to see...here is a Preview of ASUS P4SDX SiS655 motherboardlooks promising!

So what are the advantages of granite bay other then the price of the ram??? If the theorectical bandwidth is the same????

And can a higher ddr ie ddr333 be used and work (obviously only rconised as ddr266????)
Edited by mowgly on 11/25/02 08:21 PM.

So far, Granite Bay (Intel's dual channel DDR chipset) has either lagged behind the i850e by a slim amount (in almost every other review except Toms that I've seen), or have surpassed it by a slim amount. So in reality, the improvement in performance isn't significant or existent at all in many cases. The benefit is really the overclocking potential. At DDR266, the bus is in perfect sync with the FSB of a 533 FSB P4. You raise the FSB of the P4 and you raise the memory with it. Considering that at DDR266, the memory is already synchronized with the FSB, you can pump the FSB all the way up to 800 (assuming your processor makes it and your motherboard can handle it) without any problems if you use certified DDR400 memory. Realistically, you're not gonna get it that high. However, even if you up the FSB to 160 MHz QDR, it'll still run the memory at 160MHz DDR and give a significant performance boost. So I guess what I'm trying to say is, Granite Bay is great for overclocking, but at stock speeds, it's not quite so hot.

At first I don't expect to do any overclocking but like with my system now p3 600EB it's at 675 w/150fsb

ok just 1 last question would 512Mb RDram or 1Gb DDRram for the same price be better as the performance difference is marginal at best from what I've seen some sites say rambus wins other say ddr others say it's even,

but would the extra 512Mb do anything to the system

As I recall, PC1066 RDRAM is pretty expensive and not all that available.

I can have both on my doorstep in around 24-48hrs but still my question is would 512Mb of rdram better better then 1GB of ddr-ram for the same price or would 512Mb of ddr be enough as my budget was set with rdram in mind and now with the granitebays coming out I wanted to know if the ddr or rdram would be better and as stable as the i850E

Are you planning on dual channel DDR or are you planning on an i845pe chipset? If you're willing to wait for Granite Bay boards, I'd suggest that, overclock a little and voila. If you want the best default system performance, RDRAM would be better, although if you could get a gig of RAM, why not.

I was planning on getting the i850e chipset the gigabyte GA-8IHXP to be exact but with the previews of the granitebay I thought seen as the performance is almost the same I could put a Gig of ram in the granitebay for the same price as 512Mb of rdram in the i850e board no matter what I get it will be [-peep-] hot :) (and in a few month out of date as usual), but I want it to last several years like my current system did.

The PC1066 RDRAM isn't all that expensive anymore, but the GB mobos are better IMO than the 850Es for overclocking. They both have the same theoretical bandwidths, but you can have lower latency with the DC DDR RAM and also DDR333 is pretty cheap.

Overclocked they should both perform nearly the same. Just look for what would be cheaper. 2x 256MB DDR333 and a GB mobo or 512MB PC1066 RDRAM and the 8IHXP.
