Hiya:
I've been thinking in take a chance for this christmas and give to myself a new machine to replace my dinosaur. 2 processors have called my attention (price/"speed" reasons),

2.4BGHz 512K 533MHz Northwood P478
AMD ATHLON XP 2400 /266 FSB Thoroughbred

Being both at the same price level, which one would I have to take?. Any comments are appreciated

Thanks in advance

The 2.4B will do ~2.8-3GHz on the stock Intel HSF. The XP2400+ will do ~2.3GHz on very good aircooling. For stock HSF, who knows. IIRC the XP2800+ is 2.25GHz, so overclocked they should be close, but then you'll have to spend more for the HSF.

IIRC, the 2.4B is a bit faster than the XP2400+ if they're both running on their fastest respective platforms.
