Which to build?
Option 1:

P4 1.8a
Gigabyte GA-81HXP
2x RDRAM 1066
Radeon 9500 pro

vs

Option 2:

AMD 2400XP
Asus A7N8x
2x DDR333
Geforce4 4400 or maybe 9500 pro (work well with nvidia mobo?)

-------------------------

I do mostly gaming and want a fast computer that wont slow down to much when times get tough (instagib quake 3 with 10 people in 1 room). All the other things I do is just stuff like word for school.

Which one would you choose and why? Thanks.

Either would rock.
On a purely performance level the XP2400+ would perform far better than the P4 1.8A AT STOCK SPEEDS. However its well known that the 1.8A can overclock easily to at least 2.4, where it would have similar performance.

For video performance, stay away from the radeon 9500, see if you can afford a 9700. FAR better, and not as expensive as the 9700Pro.
Or, the Ti4400 is a good alternative.

I chose the 1.8 with the intention of putting it at 2.4+. When is the 9700 due out? I know its the same as the pro but clocked down.

Go for the second one. To get equal performance from the Intel setup, you must void the warranty of your CPU.

Radeon 9500 Pro is GeForce4 Ti4600 alternative.

It would be extreamily stupid to go for the P4. Dont forget that if you want you can also overclock the athlon for even more than the 2400 speed. Also there is only a 50/50 chance that you would be able to get the P4 to run at an equal speed of the athlon. And also the warranty being voided issue there as well points toward the athlon.
My advice go for the athlon for sure.

Go for intel, the pc1066 will kick ass, look into the Ti series of nvidea but notice the fact that they use different ram chips on a 128 and a 64mb version or between 4600 and 4400... difference is that some have faster access times and thus a 64 mb version will perform as good or better than a 128version in resolutions up to 1024X768 after that the 128 has an advantage

Remember the time You used 20Mb harddrives
