Simple. Turn your computer off when you don't use it. Download seti and run it to use up any spare cycles.

I don't think the oil crisis is comparable. If I have no power, or it costs 10x more, I'm not using either a desktop or a laptop.

I'll be rioting at the capital.

You could have a variety of counterarguments. For one, videoconferencing saves tons of travel money and transport fuel, right?

I may not need to drive insanely fast, but I do need to run modern entertainment software which, like it or not, continually demands more and more power-hungry computers.

And as the other person said, you can save power by turning off computers when they are not being used.

Still, I must commend the conservationist attitude.

Interesting string of posts. Maybe you need a more powerful computer

True. If it weren't for gaming I honestly think the powerPC race would slow down. MS Word/Internet Explorer run brilliantly on old computers, there's no real need for a lot of people to get new ones.

I read recently the trend is that more and more people are maintaining their older computers though. Instead, peripherals like digital cameras are what's selling hot this year. I know the digital camera area of the local BestBuy is always crowded.

They're selling a $199 lindows rig at walmart now. It'll handle the average user's needs.

But will they be happy?

The average driver could drive a 1966 Volkswagon to work, but do they?

But would they be happy?

People want more power, more luxury, and more fun. If they have the money, they'll spend it. This year has been difficult due to the economy for most. Once it kicks back up, you'll see everyone upgrade again like they did when the CPU hit a GHz.

Yeah, damn governor, bastard, liar, piece of [-peep-] politician.

I voted against him and he still won.

I hate all of you for voting for Davis. I hope you were happy with his announcment of a budget crisis a couple days after he won.

Bastards!!!

There is a huge difference between cars and computers. Your average consumer didn't need 0-60 in 4 seconds 30 years ago, they still don't need it now. How many people can say that what was considered "acceptable" computing power 30 years ago is acceptable now? Software grows and becomes more complex and the computer that runs it will need to do the same. Today's "rediculously powerful computer" is tomorrow's "average" computer. Without the "rediculously powerful computers" today, there would be no "average" computer tomorrow. 500 hp cars, whether they exist or not, would not mean that more fuel efficient cars would not be built.

Well, I'm not saying vote for Simon. I'm not saying that. But I am saying that voting for Davis was a mistake. 3,127,588+ people voted for Davis. I think that was a mistake.

I'm sick of having no good candidates to choose from.

Isn't that the point of politics though? Sure, you can vote. You get a choice. You can choose from this schmuck or this looser. Of course somone has their hands up both of their arses and plays them both like sock puppets. So no matter who you vote for (if you stick to 'the system') you're just as screwed. But because you have the freedom to choose, you can't complain that we're just a dictatorship.

Ugh. Welcome to 'the system'.

Honestly, I gave up on politics about the same time I was old enough to vote (and thus did the research). It's not the politicians who are the problem. It's 'the system' that chooses what politicians run and controls them that's the problem. I've never once voted Republican or Democrat and even then still don't even trust all of the independants and other various minor parties. Way too many politicians are either bought out by someone or have their head up their arse.

And boy wouldn't I love to have that kind of 'campaign funding' that some of these people get just handed to them with 'no strings attached'. Imagine how many hungry people could be fed or homeless people could be housed in cheap apartments or motels until they can get back on their feet with that kind of 'campaign funding'.

Too bad more people don't realize just how pointless and wasteful the whole electrion process is and how it's all just a game to placate the public with the mere illusion that they're in control of something when they're really not. :(

Who in their right mind wouldn't be sick of politics?
