Oh well, I finally took after the plunge; after years and years of slaving away with a Pii300, a shiny new XP2100+ on an MSI 745 Ultra with 512Mb Micron DDR, an 80GB HD (WD800JB - noisy, but has a 3yr warranty), Radeon 9000 Pro, 16xDVD & 48x24x28 CD-RW drives, and an AOpen H600A case will be delivered in a few days (total cost: £529.07p)

It won't be a screamer, but it will do...

Anyhow, I have bought a shim, heat compound, fans etc. (The H600 has mounts & vents for 5 80mm fans), and the CPU will be running with a stock cooler. Will this be enough, or will I have to buy something more substantial? (I'm not going to overclock anything).

If you're not OCing, then it should be more than enough. :)

I just bought a 2000+ XP as well as the MSI 745 ultra. Once it arrives I'm going to be using the AMD stock fan/heatsink and a small oscillating fan blowing into the open case until I buy an extra case fan.

I got it all from dabs.com - I live in a VAT free zone so the price is lower than what it should be (£621.66p with VAT); I didn't buy a display.

That's wierd, I own 3 of these drives and all of them are really quiet.

You should try a Seagate drive, also make sure that your fans are not overpowering the noise of your hardrives. The WD drives are not overly loud but nobody has praised them for thier silent operation.

The WD drives don't have fluid bearings (Seagate/Maxtor), so they are not as quiet as some of the latest models. However, I wanted the warranty.

Do you all find the 800JBs to be faster than most 7200RPM drives?
LHPoobaa thinks so, what about your experience with these 8MB wonders?
