Hi guys, new at this. I have a Dell xpsT500 with a SECC2 package cpu, 242pin card. I don't see anything about sockets(370) in the docs. I want to upgrade to a P3 1.2 or 1.4. Is this possible or am I just jerking myself around? 200 watt power supply currently. TIA for any opinions and info.

You have a Slot 1 processor. The link the other guy showed you...that product probably won't work right. Look in System Properties>Device Manager>System Devices to see what chipset you have. If it's a BX, you probably have a board which does not support core voltages below 1.8v. While the Slot-T will allow you to make that setting, it would probably burn out a Tualatin core CPU over time, say a few months.

There is another slotket called the Powerleap IP3/T which WILL work, because it has ITS OWN voltage regulator. You can buy a complete package with CPU from Powerleap, or you can buy the adapter itself from me for $40.

I'm fairly certain you'll find a BX chipset. The Dell board won't allow bus speeds in excess of 100MHz. So you'd be looking at a Celeron 1.2, 1.3, or 1.4GHz. This version of the Celeron has 256k cache, making it a reasonable alternative when you're stuck with that slower bus speed.

PM me if you want the bare adapter.

NO! Most Dell Slot1 boards are older Intel BX versions that only support VRM 8.2 spec, which allows minimal core voltage of 1.8v. That's too much for a Tualatin. And the boards don't support bus speeds higher than 100MHz. Look at the system specs before making blanket recommendations.

tnx for the info. I have an older (Slot 1) 440bx agp, 100mhz board. Current cpu is 500 mhz,SL365, S.E.C.C.2. It draws 2.0 v.
Thisis what I'm looking at for a replacement. BRAND NEW! RETAIL BOXED PENTIUM III 1GHZ CPU'S
1GHZ/256/100/SLOT 1 PROCESSORS
"3 YEAR INTEL WARRANTY"

Intel Pentium III Processors

1000MHz (1 GHz) - (each processor is 1Ghz)
SECC2 Package
Slot 1
100MHz FSB Bus Speed
256KB L2 Cache
1.7v
Brand New (Sealed) - (each is individually boxed)
Includes Heatsink & Fan
You're saying the voltage differential won't work, anyway of correcting that you know of. I don't want a celeron chip as I use it for realtime updating of charts and they don't work well for that. Also what do the designations secc2, fc-pga,fc-pga2 mean? Thanks again for all the help.

I doubt it will work, but you can always try it. I would try SOME Coppermine core Slot 1 in that system before I spent money on it. Because I don't recall Dell ever using the 2nd revision of that board (the one with VRM 8.4 needed to support voltages below 1.80v). You could of course get a Socket 370 CPU and an adjustable slotket, then adjust the voltage to 1.80v, still safe for the Coppermine core.

Just curious, how much is the P3 processor ? If its around $100, why don't you just replace the motherboard and the processor? A xp1700 retail plus a ECS K75SA will run you about $120. The board accepts sdram so you don't have to change your memory either. This way you won't have to worry about buying a out of date processor AND hoping it will work with your motherboard. But your computer your choice. In either case, I'd recommend you replace your psu, 200w is kinda low. You should get at least 300w.
