Hi, i'm looking to build a complete (everything!) nForce2 based computer for less than $510 US w/o shipping. It must have a dvd player and a cd burner. Thanks for your help.

The short answer is, yes you can build a computer for $510.00. A question is what do you want to do with it and how big of a monitor do you want?

I would suggest you to http://www.newegg.com( or other hardware site) and start checking prices. That will give you good idea on what you can and can not afford.

I wanna play music, surf the internet, play a couple games like warcraft3. I just want as much as I can get for $510 dollars. I don't think a Duron 600 would be a good choice if I wanna get as much as possible, right?

it can be done but you are best going for a low rated athlon xp (e.g. 1700- should ideally be t'bred) and then most importantly concentrating your budget into your memory.

no matter how hard you try, you can't polish a turd. :]

No, a Duron 600 will not suffice. When playing music do you mean just playing music off the cd player or MP3 etc. Will you be downloading MP3s off the NET, better get broadband then. What performance do you expect?

Like Metal said give us some details on what you want. Also, like I said start checking the hardware sites for prices. It is a great place to learn about components of a computer.

Have fun!

I plan on ordering the parts on December 32rd, and I absolutely need the computer done by january 1st. I have heard that there are some IGP boards floating around right now, but I haven't seen them anywhere. Anyways, does the 8rda have a locked pCI divider?

Any other ideas on how to cut the cost a bit?

I hate cheapo PSUs and cases.

Is that 512MB of memory? I guess you can save money by getting 256MB, then upgrading later on.

Just curious, why 510.00 limit? Christmas money? hehe

Do you have an old computer you can use parts from?

Have fun,

This is not clear that Epox 8RDA+ has PCI 1/6 divider or not. Go for ASUS A7N8X (non-Deluxe). Costs $135

Get a Maxtor D740X HDD. Much more reliable than the IBM one.

Buy a LiteOn 16x DVD-ROM for $45 now. When you have more $57, you can get a 48x/24x/48x LiteOn CD-RW. Don't bother with this Toshiba crap.

I would personally put a bit more than a radeon 7000 in it, but that's just me. If you really want to save money you could go for something non nforce2 based. However, you lose the benefits of the best chipset for AMD out right now.(IMO)

Ive determined it is not possible to build a complete system EXCLUDING the monitor for only $510 US that is of Quality of some sort......i got to $480 US without getting Floppy or a case or PSU yet....so.....im sorry but ur gonan need a little more money......than again iw as goign for quality parts.....like a BBA Radeon 9500.......2x 256MB PC-2700 CL2 DDR and Surprisngly a T-Bred 1700+ and the non-delux Asus A7N8X.....80GB WD Special Edition HDD......that stuff aloen will cost over $500 with tax.....

so i dunno what to say......

Ur gonan have to go el-cheapo.........like GF4 MX 440 or Saphire ATI Radeon 9000 card etc. and 2x 128MB DDR and a Palomino 1700+ and a slower HDD.....ur budget is tite.....so i recomend u either blow it all on quality stuff and wait till u get more $$$ to finish building the system or wait till u get more $$$......

I agree with Metal. I would have a hard time making a quality computer for 510.00.

Watching movies, from what source? You can from the DVD, but what about regular TV?
Listen to music, no problem from the cd-rom player.
Surfing the net, no problem with a inexpensive setup.
Using the old CD burner is a good idea, get the DVD liteon.
If you want watch TV on your system, get a video card with that option or a cheap TV Tuner card.

What games do you want to play? Probably the most important question due to the fact it will take most of the horsepower.

For the price upgrade ability will be very important!

Sorry dude, yet again ive tried to through the cheapest stuff with quality yet with a good price together and i can put everything but a sound card...Lan....Modem....Video Card...Floppy....and its about $600 before tax...so theres no way ur gonan get a nForce 2 based WHOLE system for $510 US........no way.....not unless u get an IGP nForce 2 board and screw buying any accesories.......

Ok well I found something.......keep in mind this is BEFORE Tax......I dont know what the tax percentage is in the states or whatever.....but here....

ASUS A7N8X Deluxe Motherboard....................$152.00
Kingmax PC-2700 256MB DDR Ram....................$65.00
AMD Athlon XP 1700+ T-Bred CPU...................$57.00
Lite-On 16X DVD Rom..............................$42.00
ATI Radeon 9000 Atlantis 64MB OEM................$66.00
Sony 1.44MB Floppy Drive.........................$8.00
IBM 40GB 120GXP 7200rpm HDD......................$75.00
MAXTOP CSX-3688Kl Case w/350W AMD/P4 Ready PSU...$39.00

TOTAL = .........................................$504.00

This system will easily play DVD's...surf the net.....Do your word processing or spreadsheets whatever.......Play some games....(The ones you mentioned anyways, it will play with ease) and you can even OC it later on......as it is a T-Bred Athlon XP.....I think however the CPU is OEM so it comes with no HSF...so add another $15.00 to the total for a TT Volcano 7......there you go....ALSO keep in mind you would be running this nForce 2 board in Single Memory operation mode......so u will NOT utilize the full potential of the nForce 2.....however it will still do more the enough for what ur gonan need the computer for.......another thing you might want to do is add a couple Case fans.....there cheap....but ur $510 budget REALLY sux major ass......but this is the best I could come up with....hope it helps.........

Where does it say he wants a Burner ??? Ive read all his posts no where does it say he wants a CD Burner.....nor does it say anywhere he wants a monitor.......

As far as the writting goes.....im sure that he meant Typing like in MS Word......otherwise he would have said somethign different...cuz using the word "writing" in the context as he would liek to "Burn Cd's" is totaly wrong.....but hey maybe im wrong?? Even still To Bad......i dont nkow why u even bothered to tell me that He wants a burner...tough [-peep-].....hes ona small budget....and if u can come up with something better.....fine.....until than......theres nothing that can be done about it...i tryed the best i could....

None of the systems quoted here have been complete. All leave out a modem (maybe you don't need that), a OS (maybe you don't need that either?), speakers, keyboard, mouse, and monitor (I see you aren't concerned about the monitor). I didn't include speakers, a keyboard or a mouse in my quote either. An optical mouse and keyboard can be had for about $28. You can go cheaper for a basic mouse/keyboard set. But the question begins to grow in the back of my head, "Why?!?!?".

I would recommend you look for ways to raise your funds so that you can buy some quality RAM (CL2), a good PS (Enermax or Antec), and a good video card w/ 128MB. Everybody has something they can sell or do to raise a little bit of quick cash. For $20 more you can upgrade my quote to a 8500LE w/ 128MB or a 9000Pro w/ 128MB. Everyone here has done a lot to try to get a good system for $510, but it's just not possible. MeTaLrOcKeR has the best system for the price you asked for so far. But even he had to make some sacrifices to get to $510. I am sure the RAM in his system is CL2.5 at best. That's like downgrading your CPU by one model. If you have to do it go ahead. But one of the best things about building a computer is using the best stuff (not necessarily the most expensive stuff).

Seriously see if you can do something (legal) that will put another $200 - $300 in your pocket, you will be happier long run.

For what it's worth here is my quote. Remember it has a modem and Windows XP Home, but no speakers, keyboard, mouse, or monitor.
