LCD over CRT?

Hi all,

I am about to buy a new monitor for digital graphics and animation work, but I am undecided as to which monitor to buy – a CRT or a flat LCD? I understand that for this type of work a CRT would probably be best, but like most people I cant stand the bulky box anymore. I was wondering if anyone has recommendations of a good LCD monitor that displays great colour and fast response time – ideally 20” but because of the price leap then it may have to be a 19”. (or do you feel a CRT would be better suited for the job?)

For a good LCD, I would recommend the 'VP' line by viewsonic
you have the VP912s which is the best 19" monitor they can offer for graphics.
If you feel you want a 20" (higher resolution after all), you can go for the VP201B

I think LCD's are much better looking than CRT's.

I think that you're gonna need high resolution for that kind a job. Don't forget a 20" LCD usually has 1600x1200.

1600x1200 = 1.9 megapixels
1280x1024 = 1.3 megapixels

Today we use 5,1 megapixels digital cameras. So a CRT set at 2048x1535 is better for photo viewing.

Best HDTV is 1920x1080. On the 20" or smaller LCD you can't get more than 1600 or 1280.

But CRTs spend 3 times more power, and maybe they harm more on your eyes.

I myself am looking into getting an LCD...But i plan on pairing it up with a new CRT also.

I have been looking at the 193P From Samsung as this has a great image and a sufficient Responce speed for design work... but not neccessarily animation.

What you may realy like about this monitor(and some others on the market) is its pivot feature. Rotate the monitor to a portrait layout. Great when your working with Large files that don't quickly rotate. Something you can exactly do with a CRT.

Im going to take a look into that VP model now tho too.

Did you have a price range in mind?
whats more important to you?
colour or speed? or even viewing angles?
