Hi i am probably getting an Athlon xp 2100+ soon, but i find the fan a little loud so if anyone can suggest a quiter HSF i would apreciate it. If it could match the noise level of my P3 HSF that would be great.
thx for all your help.

The only thing i know...

is that i know nothing at all.

Zalman makes a switch that reduces fan speed. It cuts it in half at the lowest setting. It's only $6.95 at Fry's electronics. Nexfan has a fanmate 1 adjustable fan controller for only $4.95. I would set the fan speed between 2500-3000 with no overclocking. For overclocking, I would go with either the swiftech or alpha heatsinks and use a slow turning 80mm fan. Try the adjuster first, and see if your cpu temps rise much. Below 60 celcius is ok.

Well if your case will allow for it. I say the zalman hsf's they are very quiet. I have the zalman cnps6000-cu. Great cooling and extremely quiet. The only problem is it is a little on the large side, so if your case is somewhat cramped then don't get it. But zalman has other great hsf's. check out the site

The current king has to be Thermalright SLK-800. It's EXTREME in all aspects, trust me, I have one. Together with a 80mm Pabst 8512N2/GL which pushes a moderate 21CFM at 12V you'll have sufficient cooling power for even overclocking and all that while emitting only 12dB(A). I run a similar fan at 7V, and it is SILENT, meaning you just don't hear it at all. The only problem with Thermalright SLK-800 is its heavy price tag. Where I live it costs 2/3 of the price of a XP2100+, and that's without a fan.
