Personally, I might use a phrase like Tom did without any discriminatory *meaning* behind it...
and that's just it, instead of looking at the meaning behind the words, people these days get offended by the words themselves...

somebody put "n****er" with the stars in it -- because in the USA it is now the apparently equivalent of a swear word... you know what? It is all about the meaning...
my best friend could come to me and in jest say "hey, hey, how's my favourite n****r today?", and while most people will run away screaming because of the sacrilege s/he just commited, I wouldn't get offended, because s/he is joking...
on the other hand, a "politically correct" term can be deathly offensive, depending on the meaning: "you know, when it comes down to it, you ain't nothing but an African American" -- how bad is that!...

let's look at the meaning here people, not just the plain words on the paper (or on the webpage)... and I'm 99% sure that Tom didn't mean a single bad thing with his phrase...

Hey Grisely, if I went to any other country I would be expected to learn their language if I were to function in their society. I would not expect them to learn English to accomodate me! So yes, anyone who chooses to live here should choose to adjust to it!

I don't want them to adjust to me. I want them to adjust to the language of the country they live in just as I would be expected to were I to live, God forbid, in mexico. When I have been down there I speak what spanish I know, I try to anyway, and I don't get upset when no one understands me nor do I force my USA-ness on any of them. I simply expect the same courtesy in return. If you decide not to learn your countries main language just because you come from somewhere else and came to your country only to leech off those who are making an effort to be a citizen, then I say you're pretty useless. I don't care about your countries second language. I don't blame you for not wanting to learn it. But you should know the main language of where you live. That's all.

This is fun. Ok- seriously though, a few points. I realise that the dialect is different in Mexico and I can't stand it. I'm glad your wife is mexican and if she speaks english she's ok by me. In fact I've dated quite a few mexicans and have mexican friends and for the most part they all agree with me.
Texas drawl- we'll I'm not really from texas, though I have lived here almost 10 years and I'm sure have picked up a few things but even when I lived in upstate NY, Colorado and England I always said "ya'll".

Well I admitted my generalization and qualified it. Of course not all of anything really holds up. Like "all women are bad drivers." Well, ok, maybe one holds up.

On a side not- not that my argument relied on them since I was specific- I think steriotypes are kinda fun some times. White, black Texan and otherwise. As soon as we stop feeling so uncompfortable about them all and learn to laugh at and except our "perceived" differences, the sooner they will dissapear.

Note- I did not say here "all" or even "most". A miniority perhaps, but I doubt it. If it is it is one of the most vocal minorities ever. ESL is great and all, but kids aren't the problem, it's adults, and as many who are taking classes to learn english, down here there's 10 who aren't to every one who is. You might find it hard to believe, but chances are you've never been to a slum in San Antonio or Houston- and don't kid your self there are upperclass outcroppings and safe parts of town (even the slums are mostly safe) but the majority of both those cities, especially houston, is poor people in slums and very few take any interest in learning english, because they don't have to. Every one around them speaks spanish as well.-So as you have no frame of reffernce, you really don't know what you're talking about. I stand by my statement and even expand to say MOST spanish speaking people in SA and Houston and down, don't care to learn english.

I wish the low riding thing was a minority. To be honest though, nearly all young mexican males who drive cars down here have low riders. It's not just a cultural nuance. It's an important status symbol. It's like they'd rather have no car at all than one that doesn't ride low. Every Mexican kid in san antonio who is a "cool" guy, has a low rider. It's not just common, it's uncommon to see otherwise.

And Yes I would look down on them for wanting whatever it is my ancestors wanted. If they wanted to maintain a way of life, stay where you're at. If you want a new way- come here and take what comes with it- learning to communicate with other citizens in English.

I love they might be giants and I have most their song memorised. I'm really not racist- you will never hear a racial slur come out of my mouth or a name, I dislike white back woods Jerry springer hicks as much as I dislike anything else. I just don't dislike them because of the spanish language, which is what I was commenting on. I don't hate mexicans blacks or anyone really, just stupid stuborn people. Like those who come here and refuse to learn english and bad mouth our country. If they don't fit into those catagories, they are not who I'm talking about. You need to get down from your moral high horse and actually listen to what I'm saying. Someone mentions a steriotype and all the little guilty feeling white people jump up in arms.

drinkerofales, I agree with you on some points and jg38141 on some but I do think you really missed where he was coming from.

I live in Minnesota, a diverse State by many standards, and you would never hear anyone utter anything negative about Mexicans or any other race for that matter (well I guess there are still some white trash folk who do, but they are a very small minority). I never really thought about it until one of my fathers childhood friends from LA came to visit.

He ranted quite a few times about how much he dislikes Mexicans (not all, the same ones jg was refering to) that prevented him from going into certain restaraunts and such. Of course the expected white guy response would be to get furious and tell the guy how much of a racist he is, remember this is liberal Minnesota (the state where nothing is allowed), but I didn't.

Why didn't I get furious, because I don't live where he does, and I don't DEAL with the same things on a daily basis, or the same people, I deal with people that have become known as "Minnesota Nice" how precious.

Then I met someone from Texas who had the same feelings, then I visited some friends in Arizona, who were saying the same things, and something occured to me. You can't judge people, even possible "racist" people, until you can honestly understand there background, which even envolves living where they do.

We are thought be these Liberal loonies that we are to imbrace "diversity", but not people who disagree with them, I am sorry but that is a bunch on nonsense.
