The AthlonXP overclocking article

Well this one didn't have any benchmarks though it contained some misinformed statements. However overall it was good, it had the intentions of showing people some enthusiast-level cooling that pushes to the extreme. The overclock itself sucked though, I had heard of many Tbreds going for 3GHZ and above, yet THG's abnormally powerful, if not the most powerful, cooling gets them a 2.75GHZ "stable" OC. If only they did a video of the building of this cooling.

However, although hypocritical of my part, we want benchmarks! I seriously hope they will have some soon, I'd be very interested to see if this Tbred will also have problems in performance at high speeds like the previous XP3400+ had. The 3dMark score of around 16000 seems nice, and most likely uses the R9700PRO. It seems to be close to the 3.6GHZ performance. I never doubted the strengh of DDR400+400MHZ FSB for Athlons and if the setup seems like I think it is, a 2.75GHZ AthlonXP with DDR400+400MHZ FSB can really compete very high clocked P4s, even further than before.

Any comments?

I am also with you. I was little bit surprised when I saw no benchmarks of this overclocked AXP. Hope THG will soon publish the bechmark results of this overclocking.

IMO, overclocked AXP should scale better than overclocked P4 'cause of nForce2 and. It might beat overclocked 4.1 Ghz P4.

I third the benchmarks. I was impressed with the P4 overclocked to over 4 GHz and wonder if the AMD can keep up or surpass it.

After a great technical article, they got the speed of a XP 2800+ wrong at 2025. The XP 2800+ runs at 2250=166x13.5.

At 2750mhz you have a 500mhz increase over 2250mhz. Which works out to a 3400+ rating. I.e. 500/83=6. So 2800+600=3400.

No they were consistently wrong. They also claimed 2835mhz to be a PR rating of 4000+. Actually 2835-2250=585.../83=7 So 2800+700=3500+ rating.

Even if you stick to the 66mhz scale for the Thoroughbred you get the following.

2200+ =1800 (Neglected Nag)
2400+ =2000
2600+ =2133
2700+ =2200
2800+ =2267
3000+ =2400
3200+ =2533
3400+ =2667
3600+ =2800
3800+ =2933

Doing further math for 333mhz fsb processors..

2600+ = 2083
2700+ = 2167
2800+ = 2250
2900+ = 2333
3000+ = 2417
3100+ = 2500
3200+ = 2583
3300+ = 2667
3400+ = 2750
3500+ = 2833
3600+ = 2917
3700+ = 3000

Sorry, sometimes I never shut up. But...If you assume 83mhz=100 points and a 2600+ is equal to the next logical multiplier less than 2083mhz which is 2000mhz (200x10.0) for a 200mhz buss. You get.

2000 mhz =est 2600+ =rounded 2600+
2100 mhz =est 2720+ =rounded 2700+
2200 mhz =est 2841+ =rounded 2800+
2300 mhz =est 2961+ =rounded 3000+
2400 mhz =est 3082+ =rounded 3100+
2500 mhz =est 3202+ =rounded 3200+
2600 mhz =est 3323+ =rounded 3300+
2700 mhz =est 3443+ =rounded 3400+
2800 mhz =est 3564+ =rounded 3600+
2900 mhz =est 3684+ =rounded 3700+
3000 mhz =est 3805+ =rounded 3800+

It is very rare that a XP 2600+ or better reaches 3Ghz, and that is for a screen shot on LN2
check the www.vr-zone.com XP database.

Oppainter broke 3.1Ghzfor a screen shot but can only bench 3D at 2.8Ghz and it performs extreamly well. Oppainter currently has the #1 AMD non-LN2 in the world on NF2 chipset.

I score 15700~16000 @ 3.06Ghz with non overclocked video card and non overclocked machine. memory at default timing. Granted im on a Granite Bay, so it is a fair compare to NF2. Just after loading with no tweaking or loss of IQ (image quality) I ran this 3Dmark to see where GB stands at pure stock. I can gain points by doing various easy tweaks like crapping the IQ (image quality), tweaking the registry (enable higher prefetch and tell XP the CPU has 512k cache(by default it is set to ZERO)), turning off all unused services, clearing icons from desktop, running process priority maximum, disabling all devices in BIOS, and so on.

Here is a link to setting XP OS for 512K cache in the registry. You will also find other great registry tweaks at tweaktown.com. Be sure to check out the rest of that XP tweak guide and part 1.
