If you´re really a hardcore online-gamer, you should ditch both. Really, you can get very decent cards for quite cheap these days. GeForce 3´s and radeon 8500´s.

The 256 is a first generation Geforce card isn't it? No idea about the 7000, you can look the benches and see which one does better.

if it's a gf1 ddr it's around a gf2mx200 performance
if it's sdr it's around tnt ultra a little above performance
I'm not sure about the tradeon though :/

GeForce 256 DDR is much faster than Radeon 7000 (VE).

"VE" means "Cheapest Version", it's comparable to an MX200 or TNT2-128. So the 256 should be faster.

Just my opinion, but anything less than a Geforce 2 Ultra is a waste of space. As someone else stated, the price of cards is really low right now (or something like that).

Geforce4 ti4200 cards are becoming very affordable. Geforce 4 MX 440 cards are so affordable its kind of rediculous to buy anything less.

Also, if you have a new system with anything faster than 1.5 Ghz anything less than a TI4200 is a waste. Geforce 256 cards become the bottleneck on any system faster than a 700MHz CPU. If you've recently bought, say, a P4 1.8 GHz you'll really need to look toward a ti4200, minimum.

If its not broke dont fix it.

If ATI holds to what they advertise they will give you some money back for the Radeon 7000 VE if you are buying another card from them. I'm not sure how much cash they actually refund you for old cards, but you might want to look into it and try to get a Radeon 8500, not the LE version.
