Hi, I am currently thinking of upgrading my GeForce 2MX 400 and my budget is $100USD and under ($200AUD) My box currently has a Duron 800, Asus KT-133 Mobo, 2x128MB PC-133 SDRAM and a SB Vibra 128.

What upgrades would you recommend to get higher performance at a low low cost ? (All in all, I was thinking of a budget of $250USD or $500AUD)

Oh yes, I might as well mention that Overclocking is not an option. (Hell, my Duron is running at 60'ish C)
Edited by Hiroshi on 01/03/03 12:13 PM.

Normally I would recommend a Radeon 8500 or Ti4200 for around $100 USD (maybe a little more for the latter) but with a Duron/KT-133 you might do better with Radeon 9000 Pro which consumes less power.

As for your Duron at 60 degrees, it's not a problem if you are not overclocking but if it bothers you the cheap Thermaltake Volcano 5 is plenty for a Duron 800. It's big at 60mm wide by 80mm long but it was able to cool my Duron 600 @ 1000 Mhz at 45 degrees (20 degree room temp, 27 degree case temp) with a moderately noisy fan. (I actually have a clone HSF but different fan and clip). You'd have to check for Volcano 5 fit on the A7V.

As for upgrades check your other thread for a how-to on installing an XP1600+ (or higher) on a KT-133 motherboard.

By the way, if you do the mod such that you use a 14X multiplier with 100 Mhz bus then you are not overclocking anything.

You can get a Ti4200 for $100USD ??? Down here (In Australia) computer parts have heavily inflated prices.

Maybe I should have been more clear with my original question, "What is the best Video Card which is in the GeForce 4 MX price range ?"

Maybe through a special offer........prices I've seen on reliable sites are around $120 for the Ti4200.

Hmm, I am wondering why no one has recommended me a GeForce 4 MX series card. I understand that the GF4MX cards are glorified GF2 cards with DDR but, Can a Radeon 9000 give me similar frame rates to a GF4MX460 ?

in fact u can get a little more frames per sec

I forgot about USA discounted pricing but yes occassionally you can find Ti4200s for $100 USD.

The GF4 MX series are just not good values, not with cards like Radeon 9000 Pro, 8500, 8500LE, and even the 9000 available. Though, the last might actually be a good match for your Duron system.

The better card you get the more use it will be to you should you upgrade the rest of your system.

The MX cards are slower than all theses card and the MX cards don't have pixel & vertex shaders. I wouldn't even consider them, personally.

The best choice by FAR for less than $100 is the Radeon 8500 full version.

9000? that would be slower than an 8500/64MB full version. BTW, the extra memory won't do much for you (nothing at all with current stuff).
