newest drivers making problems

hi, i have a geforce 2 mx 400 and i have download a the lastest drivers from nvidias website 40.1 but when i install an reboot a few times it just freezes and won't log on to windows any ideas? but when i install the older one 30.1 it works fine . any idea how to fix this problem?

30.82 is WHQL Certified for Win98
40.72 is WHQL Certified for WinXP

I'd stick to one of those two, ESPECIALLY if you're having problems.
