Hi: Please excuse my ignorance but I have never worked on a laptop
before. I have been asked to get my friends Dell 2500 inspiron up and
running. I reformatted the hard drive and installed all of the drivers.
Everything works fine except for the modem. (my friend lost all of the
software and documentation that came with the computer) I keep getting a
message that this modem is no where to be found in the computer when I
attempt to install the driver. My questions are: Is this an internal
modem like you would have on a desktop? Or is this some type of devise
that plugs into one of the slots on the side of the computer? I noticed
that there are two slots, one is filled with a plastic insert and the
other one is empty? Could this be the problem? Also, if I have to buy a
new modem for this computer, do I have to get the specific modem that
came with the computer or can I buy a generic one? Any help with this
project would be greatly appreciated. Also if someone can point me to a
place where I could buy this if I need it that would be appreciated
also. The modem is 615U Modem card, (circuit) 56K internal, notebook,
Actiontec if that helps. I am using windows 98se on this system. Thanks
again in advance. Bill

got support.dell.com and log in and then navigate to the support page for
your system by either entering the service tag (six digit alpha-numeric code
listed on the bottom of the machine) or just select the model from the
menu... you will find full documentation available as well as all drivers
for the system. the modem you mention is probably the integrated (internal)
one sold by dell. if the system has a telephone jack on the side of the
system then there is little doubt that it is. or if the system does not
have any pci cards installed in the card bay then that would also make this
clear. there were two type of action tech internal (mini pci) cards that
could have come with the system. one is a modem only and the other is a
modem and network/ethernet card. you look on the system for another jack
that is larger than the telephone jack or you can check
start-settings-controlpanel-system-devices to see if there is a network card
with a yellow "!" next to it suggesting it requires a drive to work
correctly. either driver is available at support.dell.com. might as well
get the touch pad driver while you are there too as well as the intel
speedstep if the machine is used on batteries often. good luck.

Thank you Christopher for the great information. I opened up the back of
the PC and found out that there is an Actiontec modem card installed. I
also have one phone jack on the left hand side of the computer. It seems
as though the system is not recognizing the card at all. When I try to
install the modem my system will not detect the modem card. I then try
and install it on my own and it asks me if I have a PCMCIA modem card or
if I have another type. I check the PCMCIA modem and hit next. It then
tells me to "insert the modem card". I tried checking the "other" button
and tried to install the modem that way, and it does not show up? I
downloaded all of the appropriate drivers from Dell and this is the only
one I am having problems with. Any suggestions? I have installed win
98SE and the drivers for the touch pad, the video, the audio, and the
chipset so far and everything is fine. Thanks again for your input. I
sincerely do appreciate it. Best regards Bill

Thanks again for the salient advise. I did just that and nothing. The
system says that there is no modem attached, although I pulled it out of
the card slot and put it back in. Since this laptop originally came with
Me on it and I formatted it and changed it over to 98 Se, could that
have created the problem? I checked the Dell web site for drivers and
downloaded and tried every one but, nothing has worked. Tech support
told me it came with a Actiontec v/90 nic mpci combo. The driver that is
supposed to work is ACTJ1113.exe. Unfortunately since the system does
not recognize the modem I can't install any drivers. I am open to any
advice. I am trying to do a favor for a little old lady from Pasadena
and I am getting totally frustrated. Thanks again in advance. Bill

I'm going to try to post the dell part numbers and the filenames that are
associated with them as drivers or whatnot.

look for a post that reads "DPNs / Driver Files" -- it's dated to late 2001,
so your parts may not be on it.

The DPN is the Dell Part Number of the item (in this case, modem) in
question.
